Indiana further cemented their legacy as “Breaststroke U” today, earning the top five qualifying spots in the men’s 100 breaststroke at the Big 10 Championships in this morning’s prelims.
Some of the best breaststrokers in the country have come out of Indiana, including women’s 100 breast World Record Holder Lily King, and they are incredibly well known for their ability to produce and develop fast breaststrokers at the top level, but even this was crazy to witness.
Six men in this morning’s prelims session went under 52 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Five of them were from Indiana, and most of them were separated by four-tenths of a second. Senior Finn Brooks led the way, ripping a 50.42 to earn the top seed. Caspar Corbeau, the Texas transfer, came in 2nd at 51.18. Jassen Yep, another 5th year, swam 51.25 for 3rd. Joshua Matheny, a senior, went 51.30 to take the 4th seed, and Brian Benzing, a 3rd grad student, came in at 51.59 for 5th.
The only non-Indiana breaststroker to go under was Michigan junior Ozan Kalafat who went almost a second faster than his season best time to swim 51.78 in the event.
Despite being widely regarded as one of the best breaststroke schools in the country, Indiana hasn’t won the Big 10 title in the men’s 100 breaststroke since 2019.
Can one of these five men win the school’s first title in the 100 breaststroke in six years?
Big 10 Finals start at 5:30 pm Central Time on the Big 10 Network.
The top 8 are from last year, not this year
Can IU hit a double taper and put 5 in the A final at NCAAs? Probably not, but a man can dream.
I doubt many of their top guys are fully shaved and rested. If they already had NCAA times, they is no reason to go all in at conference.
IU is usually one of the few teams that has a lot of swimmers at their best at NCAAs, so we’ll find out in about a month how rested they are right now.
