Harvey Breaks Four Meet Records at the CARIFTA Championships

Emma Harvey of Bermuda dominated the 13-14 year old age group at the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Championships in Le Lamentin, Martinique. Harvey won the 100 freestyle (59.34), 50 backstroke (30.43), 50 butterfly (28.44), 100 butterfly (1:03.50), 200 IM (2:26.69) and 400 IM (5:16.20).

She set new championship records for the 13-14 year old age group in the 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke as well as the 50 and 100 butterfly.

She could have set one more in the 100 backstroke if it wasn’t for Danielle Titus of Barbados who out swam Harvey in the second half of the race winning the event in a new meet record time of 1:06.58. Harvey finished second in a time of 1:06.60.

Titus also won the 200 backstroke in a championship record time of 2:24.16. She added a gold in the 400 freestyle posting a time of 4:40.37).

The Higgs sisters from the Bahamas were the story the women’s 15-17 year old age group. Margaret Higgs, the elder of the two sisters, won the 200 breaststroke (2:35.33), 200 butterfly (2:25.87), 200 IM (2:23.66) and 400 IM (5:09.02). Her winning time in the 200 breaststroke was a new championship record.

Lilly Higgs took gold in the 100 breaststroke setting a new championship record touching in a time of 1:12.12. She also took the 50 breaststroke in a time of 33.44.

Margaret finished second to Lilly in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke while Lilly finished second to Margaret in the 200 breaststroke as well as the 200 and 400 IM.

Naele Portecop of Guadeloupe set two new championship records in the 11-12 year old age group posting a 29.09 in the 50 butterfly and a 1:06.27 in the 100 butterfly.

On the men’s side Izaak Bastian broke three championship records in the 13-14 year old age group. Bastian won the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.25, the 50 breaststroke in a time of 30.41 and the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.76. He added another win in the 200 breaststroke finishing in a time of 2:24.99.

Yaei Touw Ngie Tjouw of Suriname set a championship record in the 13-14 year old 100 butterfly winning the event in a time of 57.49. Tjouw also won the 50 and 200 butterfly as well as the 200 and 400 IM.

Mccallum Clark of Barbados set two new championship records in the 11-12 age group in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He took the 100 in a time of 1:13.10 and the 200 in a time of 2:37.78.

Keanan Dols of Jamaica set the only championship record in the 15-17 year old age group winning the 200 IM in a time of 2:07.27.

Although he did not break any championship records Alex Sobers of Barbados had an impressive meet winning the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle in the 15-17 year old age group. Sobers had close calls in both the 100 and 200 winning the 100 by four one-hundredths of a second and the 200 by two one-hundredths of a second.
