The Grand Canyon swimming and diving program posted two important wins in its home finale against WAC competitor California Baptist.

There is no better way to celebrate Senior Day than by winning to stay in second place in the conference. The men won 174-126 on Saturday while the women topped the Lancers 168-128 at Fr Edward A Reese Aquatic Center.

Not only did the Lopes get hot when it mattered most, but the team also came away with two pool records by freshmen who won by over two seconds each.

In his first-ever competition with GCU, Mohamed Mohamady beat the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 46.22 seconds, to claim first place. Mohamady is a freshman who came to GCU at the semester mark from Cairo, Egypt.

Another Lopes freshman, Jonathan Rom, broke the pool’s 200 breaststroke record with a time of 1:58.09. Rom has continued to impress throughout the whole season.

On their day, the seniors contributed to the win as well. Adrian Curbelo won the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.15. Omar Elsayd and Curbelo, along with freshman Eli Cohen and Alex Volkov, won the men’s 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.92.

For the women, freshman Paula Martinez Moreno won the 100 butterfly with graduate Emily Muteti taking second. The Lopes had times of 54.27 and 54.60, respectively.

Muteti, Briana Rittenbach, Kaitlyn Carr, and Maria Brunlehner won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.76.

Next, GCU will travel to take on UNLV on Feb. 4.

PHOENIX – The CBU men’s and women’s swim and dive teams made their annual trip to the desert on Saturday, taking part in the GCU quad-dual, facing off with GCU, Arizona Christian, and Ottawa. The Lancers trounced the two NAIA opponents but fell to the host Lopes.

The Lancer men earned seven wins on the day, beginning with the first race of the day, the 200 medley relay. Remi Fabiani secured a pair of wins in Phoenix, while Mark Kovacsics, Jonathan Reiter, and Robert Moseley earned an individual win of their own. Gael Jimenez and Evan Honer split the top spot in the diving competitions, with Jimenez taking the 3-meter event while Honer claimed the 1-meter crown.

The women earned half a dozen top finishes, with Lydia Bartlett and Natalia Bedolla each winning twice. Giulia Decataldo and Michaela Trnkova each touched first in one of their races.

Next up for CBU is a trip south to La Jolla to take on UC San Diego on Saturday, January 28.
