FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 7, 2022) – NAU hosted its annual intrasquad meet, pitting Blue vs Gold for a final preseason competition where Gold won for the first time since 2019 with a score of 55-49.
Going down to the final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the gold team of Bena Koehn, Caylah Jago, Sarah Dorrheim and Annie Carlton clinched the win by nearly three seconds with a time of 1:39.50.
“When we’re one team instead of separated into two teams we’re going to be really good,” Head Coach Andy Johns said.
Just like last year, Helena Robla-Alvarez won both the 200-yard free (1:55.09) and the 500-yard free (5:10.92) for NAU Blue.
NAU Gold made a large mark in the diving events, claiming second through fifth in the 1-meter dive and earning the top-two spots in the 3-meter dive to claim 12 points across the two events alone. Maggie Wesche led the way for NAU Gold in diving with a victory in the 3-meter dive (332.95) and a runner-up result in the 1-meter (300.95).
Wesche’s twin sister, Grace Wesche, stood out for NAU Blue with the top score in the 1-meter dive (303.75), just ahead of Maggie. She also finished third in the 3-meter (303.82).
“I know for Blue and Gold on the diving side that’s the best we’ve ever done,” Associate Head Coach Nikki Kelsey said.
It was another banner day for Maddie Rey, who secured a pair of wins of her own in the 150-yard butterfly (1:32:06) and the 200-yard IM (2:09.34), beating the rest of the field by over six seconds.
Haley Mathew, who finished second in the 200-yard IM (2:15.48), claimed victory in the 150-yard breaststroke (1:46.58).
Nicole Kepl brought in a win in the 50-yard free (24.89) and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.90), behind Bena Koehn (53.39).
“We got some returners in some pretty good spots,” Johns said. “We got freshmen that are stepping up already and surprising some people. There’s a lot of good competition in practice every day. I think we’re in a good spot.”
The Lumberjacks will start the regular season at the Wall Aquatic Center to host Ottawa, Arizona Christian and fellow WAC opponent Idaho on Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. MST.
