Day one at the British Trials ended with three athletes locking in their ticket for the Rio Olympic Games. James Guy opened finals with a 3:43.84 400m free, a mark slightly off his British National Record of 3:43.75, but nonetheless a solid first event for the twenty-year old. Two-time British National Champion Adam Peaty earned his Rio qualification in the 100m breast. He already established the world’s fastest time this year in prelims (58.74), but lowered the standard to 58.41 in finals. The only woman to swim an automatic standard on day one, British National record-holder Hannah Miley, cranked out a fast back-half against Aimee Willmott in the 400 IM for a final time of 4:33.40.
