RESULTS
The Iona men fell to the visitors 199-95. The win for the Iona women raises their season mark 8-1 overall and closes out an undefeated home season for the first time in Coach Nick Cavataro‘s 42-year tenure with either gender. The Iona men fall to 3-5 on the year.
MEET SUMMARY
The women were paced by Senior Tri-Captain Isabella Nicholson, who won the 50, 100 and 200-yard Freestyle events and anchored the decisive 400-yard Freestyle Relay to a win, combining with Megan Josephs, Benkert and Grace Curry.
Ashley Benkert who took both the 100 and 200-yard Butterfly events; Julia Moser who won both the 100 and 200-Breaststroke; Victoria Novinskiy who won the 200-Backstroke and Individual Medley events.
“This was a great team effort for our women and they never gave in, commented Coach Nick Cavataro. “We got off to a good start winning the 200-Medley relay with Novinskiy, Moser, Benkert and Josephs. Then Fairfield came right back with a win in the 1000 and good springboard diving and it came down to the end.”
The Iona men picked up a pair of wins from Junior Michael Faughnan, who touched first in the 1000 and 500-Freestyle and also anchored the winning 400-Freestyle Relay where the team of Daniel Hadary, Liam Pyatt, Mikel Palaj and Faughnan posted a season best time of 3:04.93.
“Our men competed well today,” noted Cavataro, “coming out of the training trip and last week and hard training this week, they are really looking forward to taper and MAAC Championships. Fairfield swam strong today and showed balance in every event. We will have to be sharper up and down the line-up.”

Iona goes right back to action on Wednesday as they travel to Fordham and then to Manhattan College on Saturday, January 28 to close out the season.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Ed Hunt won three individual events while Sam Tonole picked up wins in both the 1 meter and 3 meter dives as the Fairfield University men’s swimming and diving team beat Iona University by a 199-95 count in the final dual meet of the 2022-23 campaign. Erin Hoyland collected two wins in individual events with Lia Oppenheim also sweeping the diving events as the Stags’ women’s swimming and diving team was edged by the Gaels, 151.5 to 142.5.
Hunt gave Fairfield a strong edge with his performances this afternoon, touching the wall first in the 200 fly (1:55.48), the 200 back (1:57.91), and the 200 IM (157.20). Tonole also posted the high scores in both diving events, tallying 240.36 points in the 1 meter and 241.20 in the 3 meter. On the women’s side, Hoyland took the top spot in the 1000 free with her time of 10:41.48 and in the 500 free by completing the distance in 5:15.38. Oppenheim scored well in both diving events, netting 193.57 in the 1 meter and 227.92 in the 3 meter.
Alexey Belfer and Chris Ford were double winners in their events this afternoon with Belfer registering the best time in the 50 free (21.25) and the 100 free (46.79). Ford experienced similar success in the 100 breaststroke (58.52) and the 200 breaststroke (2:10.33). Jeffrey Vlass helped the Stags finished second in both of those breaststroke events, recording a time of 1:00.89 in the 100 and 2:12.99 in the 200.
Tim Regan, Oliver McLaughlin, and Evan Fair also garnered a win on the afternoon with Regan starting things off with his first place swim in the 200 free (1:41.20). McLaughlin followed up with the top spot in the 100 back (52.70) and was backed up by Will Robinson’s second-place run of 53.81. Fair, who also secured a second-place swim in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.95, took first place in the 100 fly with his time of 52.44.
Erini Pappas also earned a win during the meet, touching the wall first in the 100 back with her time of 58.09.
Today’s meet was the final dual meet of the season as the Stags will now begin focusing on the championship portion of their schedule. Fairfield opens up competition in the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. from February 8-11.
