The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team captured its 71st consecutive Mid-American Conference dual victory Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14, with a 150-125 win over Ball State University. Eastern Michigan won 15 of 16 events and 13 different Eagles registered wins on the way to victory.

Eastern Michigan broke the dual open with a sweep of the top five spots in the 200 Medley Relay. Sophomore Ricky Perez, senior Conner Finnigan (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central), junior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), and sophomore Branson Smith (Louisville, Ky.-Ballard) teamed up for a first-place finish with a time of 1:32.85.

In the 1000 Freestyle, senior Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers) posted a season-best time of 9:44.88 to headline a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Eagles. Freshman Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan) claimed second, while sophomore JF Murphy‘s (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne) career-best time of 9:48.15 was good for third.

Sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) paced the Eagles in the 200 Free. Kawaguchi continued his stellar sophomore season with a first-place finish and season-best time of 1:42.20.

Well ahead in the team standings, EMU deferred points from this point with the exception of first-place finishers.

Burton returned to the pool in the 100 Backstroke, claiming the top spot behind a season-best time of 50.22, before redshirt junior Lance Bergmann (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) won the 100 Breaststroke.

A trio of freshman posted career-best times in the 200 Butterfly, with Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) coming away with the first-place finish with a time of 1:51.24. Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) was just behind him, posting a time of 1:51.93, while Matt Martin (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights) also posted a career-best, touching in in 1:53.25.

Senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) led the way for the Eagles in the 50 Free, taking home first with a time of 21.62. Sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) then notched the top spot in the 100 Free with a time of 46.67. Freshman Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) was not far behind, clocking in with a time of 47.12 in his season debut, while Smith posted a season-best (47.52) and Murphy added a career-best (48.29) mark.

Sophomore Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) was dominant on the springboard, turning in a pair of 300+ scores. On the 3-meter, Gillis scored a season-high 330.53 to earn the win before adding a score of 307.35 on the 1-meter to complete the sweep. Gillis’ season-best mark on the 3-meter was not only a season-high, but was also the sixth-best score in the conference this season.

In the next two events, the Eagles turned to their freshmen, who stepped up to the challenge. Eric Akins (Houston, Texas-Klein) bested the field by more than half a second in the 200 Back to pick up his first win in the event this season. Then, Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga.-Evans) finished nearly two seconds ahead of the competition to earn the first win of his career in the 200 Breast.

The Green and White closed out the meet with three more wins. Senior Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) notched a win in the 500 free before Johnson added a first-place finish in the 100 Fly.

After a strong showing by the Eagles in the 200 IM, Eastern Michigan ended the day with a win in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Burton, freshman Mark Krusinski (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights), Johnson, and Perez used a strong opening leg to cruise to a first-place finish, clocking in with a time of 1:25.61.

Next up for the Eagles is a tri-meet with Tiffin and Wayne State next weekend, Jan. 21, at Jones Natatorium. The co-ed meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
