Four months ago, Darian Townsend earned his American citizenship. A month after that, he earned a spot on the USA Swimming National Team and the World Short Course Championships team.
On Wednesday, the newly-minted American sprinter had a straight-from-Hollywood moment and carried the U.S. flag in the opening ceremonies at the Short Course World Championships.
Townsend swam the leadoff leg of the Americans’ 400 free relay in prelims, but won’t swim again in finals. That is likely to be his only swim of the meet.
