Since taking a short hiatus from the sport after winning Commonwealth Games gold in the 200 IM, 23-year-old Australian swimmer Daniel Tranter made the move to North Baltimore Aquatic Club (NBAC) late last year to pursue training under head coach Bob Bowman.
How has he been faring under the new training environment? “It went really well”, says Tranter, now back in Sydney with upcoming Australian Champs coming up. (The Australian) “The guys over there knew I had had a lot of time out of the water, so they knew there would be issues with my weight and my fitness. I put 100 per cent of my faith into them and it was repaid. I was able to lose 8.5kg and get back to my race weight in three weeks.’’
Specifically, Tranter called out Michael Phelps as the “best training partner in the world that I could ask for.” He continued that “It’s a rare opportunity to train with the best guy in history in my event. His training times are extraordinary, but I learned even more from watching the way he goes about things, his mindset and approach.’’
Tranter also cited Bowman’s mental work as key to his preparedness for the Australian Championships. Testing Tranter in a variety of different ways, “Bob has done a fantastic job of making sure that I am mentally ready”, Tranter expressed to The Australian.
Australian coach Brian Sutton, in consultation with Bowman, will tend to Tranter’s taper in preparation for the Australian Championships that begin on April 3rd.
