On night 2 of the 2024 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Charlie Swanson surprised many by touching 2nd in the 100 breast and qualifying for his first Olympic team. Swanson is an NCAA All-American for Michigan who graduated in 2020 and specialized in the 400 IM during his time as a Wolverine. In his post-graduate career, however, he’s focused on the shorter breaststroke events, 100 and 200, which paid off for him in a big way this week.
This interview occurred on Day 2 of the Olympic Trials (Sunday, June 16, 2024).
Congratulations, Charlie ! You earned the spot. And like many, you have been earning your way for a long time, at NOVA Aquatic, The University of Michigan and on the USA National Team. You have done the job and you deserve the glory of being an Olympian and competing in The Olympics as did your teammate, Townley Haas in Rio and in the NCAA for Texas. Enjoy the ride and THANK YOU for representing NOVA Aquatic, Richmond, Virginia,The University of Michigan and the United States of America. Swim Free, friend.
I kinda forgot Swanson made the team because
1) 59.16 isn’t really anything eye popping and shouldn’t make a US national team in 2024. (58 missed the team last cycle)
2) everyone was just dogging on MA for shitting himself lmao instead of giving credit to Swanson for going a PB
US breaststroke might be cooked when Fink retires
US breaststroke will be fine. They just need someone to emerge in the 100 the way Fallon has in the 200. It’ll happen within the next couple years.
