Cate & Bronte top 50 free, Herzog leads tough 200 free field at Victorian Open Day 2 prelims

Cate Campbell‘s comeback from shoulder surgery keeps trucking along at the Victorian Open Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Campbell nabbed the top qualifying spot in the 50 free with a 25.14. Her younger sister Bronte sits second in 25.31 as the Campbell sisters look to sweep the event Saturday night.

The men’s 200 free saw 22-year-old Kurt Herzog top his better-known teammates James Magnussen and Mack Horton. Herzog was 1:52.04 to grab an inside lane for tonight’s final. The 18-year-old Horton went 1:52.06 with Magnussen third in 1:52.14.

Day 1’s 50 breaststroke winner Matthew Treloar is in good shape to add another win after taking the top 100 breast seed in 1:02.13.

Also looking to double up is Brittany Elmslie, who was the top 100 fly qualifier in 59.56 a day after winning the 50 fly.

A couple potential battles in finals: the men’s 200 back saw Joshua Beaver (2:00.87) and Mitchell Larkin (2:01.68) easily top the rest of the field, and in the women’s 400 free, Bronte Barratt (4:13.99) will face off with 800 free winner Katie Goldman (4:15.54).
