CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The Boston College swim and dive team opened their 2021-22 season with the New England Catholic Invitational over the weekend, hosting Providence, Holy Cross, Merrimack, Mount St. Mary’s, La Salle, and Assumption for the swim events while Holy Cross hosted the dive portion.
Both the women and men finished in first place, with the women’s team scoring 1,439 points to top the runner-up Providence Friars (525 points), and the men’s 1,317 points beating second-place Mount St. Mary’s (418 points). The women set twelve meet records and the men added ten of their own, setting a total of 23 meet records, which included 31 combined first-place finishes and three swims that rank in the top-ten performances in Boston College history.
The men broke two pool records over the weekend, in the 400 Medley Relay and the 400 Individual Medley. The men’s team of Michael Horkan (51.63), Jack Doyle (57.67), Kyle Floyd (49.07), and Andres Wong (46.68) combined to swim a new pool-best of 3:25.05. Freshman Andrew Blusiewicz swam a 4:04.03 to set the new mark in the 400 IM. The women set a new mark in the 400 Medley Relay as well, with Samantha Smith (57.39), Gigi Baldacci (1:05.06), Isabel Blaze (56.34), and Ashleigh Scott (52.10) combining for a pool-best 3:50.89.
MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
• Kyle Floyd logged four meet-record performances in the 200 IM (1:52.94), 400 Medley Relay (3:25.05, 49.07 split), 200 Free (1:41.92), and 200 Fly (1:51.41)
• Recorded the top eight finishes in the 200 Free
• Recorded the top five finishes in the 200 Individual Medley
• Zachary Szmania finished first in the 1000 Freestyle with a meet-record time of 9:41.75
WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
• Megan Kramer logged four meet-record performances of her own, in the 500 Free (4:59.99), 200 Free (1:53.82), 200 Fly (2:05.42), and the 400 Free Relay (3:32.22)
• Recorded the four best finishes in the 100 Breast, with Gigi Baldacci setting the meet record with a 1:05.89
• Haley Dolan broke her own meet record in the 50 Free, swimming a 23.65
• Ann Mae King scored a meet-record score of 249.90 in the 1-meter dive
