The Badalona City Cousil has provided free buses for the residents of the city so that they have the opportunity to greet the town’s Favourite Daughter at the Airport. Spaniard Mireia Belmonte, who was awarded the title of Badalona’s Favourite Daughter in 2015, will be greeted at the airport by many of the towns people including the mayor.
Belmonte will be arriving at the airport with fellow Badalonian Anna Cruz who was part of the Spanish women’s basketball team that won the silver medal in Rio.
After finishing second in two events in London Belmonte took the gold in the 200 butterfly and finished with a bronze in the 400 IM in Rio. She told Cope.es that she exceeded the goals she had for this Olympic Games, “The Games have been a wonder,” said Belmonte. “I had my expectations and have far exceeded them.”
She also told the news outlet that she now has her sights set on the 2017 World Championships in Budapest.
On Wednesday the Badalona will have a celebration for Belmonte who will be honoured by the mayor at Guildhall. After that presentation the Olympic gold medalist will address the public from the balcony of the town hall.
