It was 9-of-9 for a 12-year-old at the Middle Atlantic Junior Championships in mid-March.
Anderson Barry of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and the Five Star Swim Club won nine individual finals events at the meet, which followed him finishing first in the preliminaries in those events.
In the boys 11-12 age group portion of the meet, Barry set personal best times to win the 50 freestyle (23.89), 100 free (51.42), 50 backstroke (27.20), 100 back (57.26), 200 back (2:01.55), 50 fly (25.33) and 100 individual medley (1:00.03). He added wins in the 200 free (1:53.76) and the 100 fly (57.67).
Barry’s time in the 200 back ranks No. 8 this season in the 11-12 age group.
In girls’ competition, Ava Buhrman of Cumberland Valley Aquatic Club was the individual standout, winning six events in the 13-14 age group. She swam personal best times in all six of her victories.
Buhrman won the 50 free (23.12), the 100 free (50.45), 200 free (1:48.57), the 500 free (4:50.69), the 200 IM (2:00.24) and the 400 IM (4:15.92).
In the girls 14-year-old age group, Buhrman owns this year’s fifth-fastest times in the 200, free, 500 free and 200 IM, the seventh-fastest time in the 400 IM and the 11th-fastest time in both the 50 and 100 free.
Team-wise, the Jersey Wahoos swept the combined, girls’ and boys’ team standings.
Other individual standouts were:
- In the boys’ 13-14 age group, Jaxen Edwards of the Delaware Swim Team won six events, all in personal best times. He captured the 100 free (48.23), 200 free (1:42.31), 500 free (4:37.61), 100 back (53.97), 200 IM (1:54.38) and 400 IM (4:02.1). Edwards was also second in the 100 breast in a personal best time of 1:00.44. He currently owns the 17th-fastest time in the country in the 400 IM for the 13-14 boys’ age group.
- Also in the 13-14 boys age group, Luke Bickett of the Jersey Wahoos won the 50 free (21.75), 200 back (1:52.13), 100 Brest (58.99) and the 200 breast (2:08.95), all in personal best times.
- Nico Oshenic of the Jersey Wahoos won three events in the 11-12 girls’ age group, all in personal best times. He won the 500 free (5:04.91), 1000 free (10:27.25) and 1650 free (17:43.73). He currently holds the eighth-fastest time in the 1000 free and the 16th-fastest time in the 1650 free for the 11-12 age group.
- Grace Zhang of Upper Main Line YMCA won three events in the 11-12 age group, each in personal best times. Zhang won the 100 breast in 1:07.69, the 200 breast in 2:25.09 and the 200 IM in 2:15.01. In the 11-12 age group, she owns the sixth-fastest time in the 200 breast and the 12th-fastest time in the 100 breast.
- Brixie Wilent of Suburban Seahawks Club won three events and had three second-place finishes in the 11-12 age group. Wilent won the 50 free (personal best 25.31), 50 breast (31.87) and 100 IM (personal best 1:02.51). She was second in the 200 IM (2:15.81), 200 breast (2:31.19) and 1650 free (19:03.56), all in personal best times.
- Also in the 11-12 age group, Alyssa Martino of the Jersey Wahoos won the 1650 free (18:36.47) and 50 back (28.89) in personal best times. She also swam personal best times to finish second in the 400 IM (4:48.98), 200 fly (2:21.36) and 200 back (2:11.92), and finished second in the 100 back (1:02.68).
- Alexey Zaitev, an 11-year-old from BeFirst Swim, swam what is now the third-fastest time in and the 200 back (2:08.29) and the seventh-fastest time in the 50 back (27.89) in his age group. He also finished second in the 100 back (1:00.83).
- Alex Kovtounenko of Orca Swim Club swam a 26.73 in the 50 fly and a 59.09 in the 100 fly, in the 11-12 boys age group, both of which were personal bests. His time in the 100 fly is the seventh-fastest in the 11-year-old boys’ age group,
- Marion Li of Germantown Academy Aquatic swam a 2:10.76 in the 200 backstroke, the second-fastest time this year in the 11-year-old girls’ age group.
