We’ve been reporting on the extraordinary performances of 12-year-old Yu Zidi throughout this week’s Chinese National Championships.

The youngster has already qualified for this summer’s World Championships in the women’s 200m IM and 200m fly, posting otherworldly marks of 2:10.63 and 2:06.83, respectively.

With the final day of competition taking place in Shenzhen tomorrow, listen to Yu in her own words as she officially introduces herself to the world with the enthusiasm that only comes from a young phenom.

Translation of video:

“Hello everyone! My name is Yu Zidi. I started swimming during the summer holidays when I was six years old. My coach took an interest in me and so I started practicing. My older ‘sister’ Li Bingjie is also on the same team. She teaches me turns and kicks. I want to be in top condition at the World Aquatics Championships and show my true ability!”

Additionally, take a look at how someone so young trains at an elite level to get her to where she has been thus far, turning heads around the world. In the gym or in the pool, Yu is doing the right things to rank among the top performers on the planet at just 12 years of age.

Why do so many here jump on skepticism like it’s a crime or a slur on the sport? It’s none of that, nor is it a criticism of this talented child. But the anssertion that expressing doubt is banned till there’s a conviction is facile. An insane outlier from a country with that history – you’d be daft not to consider possibilities. Which include that she’s the fastest 12 year old, male or female, in history, by miles. Or that something else is at play.

The fact that the 200m fly, 200m IM and 400m IM are the events she’s showing pure talent scares me and McIntosh. 🥴

I really enjoyed the part when she said “ni hao” (你好).

And yet you do care enough to tell everyone that you have no opinion.

Minor addition/edit to the translation: she frequently went to the pool during summer when she was 6, and a coach spotted her and recruited her to join their practices

Sister is Li Bingjie – well that says everything. It’s all in the genes. Watch out Summer, she’ll be competitive if not the favorite in a couple three of your main events! There is comment she sounds and looks much older. I agree, not your typical 12 year old.

‘Sister’ as in a mentor not her actual sister

Until it’s proven otherwise, I see a typical 12-year-old girl with very atypical swimming talent. In a country of 1.3 billion people, anything is possible — including smashing blood vials.
