For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final and places 9 through 16, the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, and “Down” to swimmers in the B final.
The Kenyon women out-swam their seeds this morning to position themselves for a title defense. The schools dominating the team race discussion have been Kenyon, MIT, and NYU, but Denison vaulted themselves into contention as well this morning. The NCAC rivals are tied with 5/2 this morning.
The NYU women have six finals swims tonight, but going 1/3 in one of their best events, the 500 free, puts a ceiling on the points they can grab. They’ll need every point they can get, as they have no finalists in the 200 IM. Still, with Kaley McIntyre lowering her national record in the 50 free in prelims, the Violet should have an easy time grabbing points at the end of the session. The MIT women are in a similar boat; with no finalists in the 500 free, they will be depending on their finalists elsewhere to keep pace. Still, the Engineers have a little more room to swing as they’re only the 5th fastest qualifiers in the relay.
On the men’s side, Denison has nine finals swims on deck (4/5). With so many B finalists, they aren’t on pace to match their projected score from the psych sheets, but by sheer numbers the Big Red look well on their way for a redemption after finishing 6th last year. In addition, diver Nick Fogle qualified for the championship final on 3-meter, which will add at minimum 11 points to their total.
NYU has the second-most finals appearances tonight (3/1), though just missing out on the A final in the 400 medley might allow room for Kenyon (3/0) to slip by. Chicago had a strong individual showing (2/2), but a disqualification in the 400 medley relay prelims will sting.
Score Projections
Note: These projections do not include the preliminary results from men’s 3-meter diving. Projected psych sheet scores only include swimming.
