While competing in the women’s 800m freestyle tonight at the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships, 20-year-old Miyu Namba fired off a new Japanese national record.
20-year-old Namba produced a time of 8:12.98, good enough for bronze behind winner Lani Pallister of Australia and runner-up Erika Fairweather of New Zealand. Pallister logged a new national record of her own in 8:04.07 while Fairweather touched in 8:10.41.
The previous Japanese national record stood at the 8:13.34 Ai Shibata posted in May of 2007, meaning Namba just put up the fastest time by a Japanese swimmer in over 15 years.
For Namba, her personal best entering this competition rested at the 8:15.47 she logged at the 2021 Japanese Short Course National Championships. That performance rendered her the 3rd fastest Japanese swimmer of all time.
With tonight’s result, however, Namba now checks in as the 4th fastest Asian in history.

Namba is no stranger to a podium, having earned 800m free silver at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships. However, tonight’s result marks the budding star’s first senior national record.
