Catch up on the action: Day 1 Finals Full Recap
The first finals session of the 2022 World Championships has wrapped up in Budapest. There were several notable swims throughout the day, including strong swims from Leon Marchand and Katie Ledecky. Here’s a look at all of the finals race videos from the day:
MEN’S 400 FREE – FINAL
Podium:
- Elijah Winnington (AUS), 3:41.22
- Lukas Märtens (GER), 3:42.85
- Guilherme Costa (BRA), 3:43.31

Australia’s Elijah Winnington swam to a blazing fast time of 3:41.22, making himself the 5th fastest performer in history. Germany’s Lukas Martens managed to hold on for second ahead of a charging Guilherme Costa, who reset his South American Record in the process.
WOMEN’S 400 FREE – FINAL
Podium:
- Katie Ledecky (USA), 3:58.15 CR
- Summer McIntosh (CAN), 3:59.39
- Leah Smith (USA), 4:02.08
Katie Ledecky reclaimed her gold medal in this event, coming in under the Championship Record that she set back in 2017. Canadian Summer McIntosh chased Ledecky the entire time, ultimately becoming the 4th person to ever break the 4:00 barrier in route to a silver medal. After missing out on the Olympics last season, American Leah Smith managed to make the podium by snagging a bronze medal.
MEN’S 400 IM – FINAL
Podium:
- Leon Marchand (FRA), 4:04.28 CR
- Carson Foster (USA), 4:06.56
- Chase Kalisz (USA), 4:07.47
Leon Marchand blew past everyone’s expectations in this race, staying with the world record line through the first 300m. Though Marchand fell short of breaking the World Record, he set a new European Record with his swim. Americans Carson Foster and Chase Kalisz also threw down fast times to claim silver and bronze.
MEN’S 4×100 FREE RELAY – FINAL
Podium:
- United States, 3:09.34
- Australia, 3:10.80
- Italy, 3:10.95
In a fast field that saw 4 men split 46 seconds, the US men came out on top. The team of Caeleb Dressel, Justin Ress, Ryan Held, and Brooks Curry won by a body length ahead of Australia. For the Aussies, Kyle Chalmers threw down a 46.60 split.
WOMEN’S 4×100 FREE RELAY – FINAL
Podium:
- Australia, 3:30.95
- Canada, 3:32.15
- United States, 3:32.58
As expected, Australia dominated this race as Mollie O’Callaghan, Madi Wilson, Meg Harris, and Shayna Jack combined for a time of 3:30.95. Through the first two legs, the team nearly matched the World Record pace. The Canadians managed to hold off the US for silver, thanks to a 52.51 anchor leg from Penny Oleksiak.
Marchand had an amazing race but that was huge for Carson foster as well, dropping down to a 4:06 and getting silver in his first ever LCM international final at the senior level is an awesome accomplishment after missing teams by so little in the past. No doubt he worked insanely hard to get that done

Does anyone know how we can watch a replay in Australia? Seems like 9Now is live stream only and there is no way to watch a replay. Odd choice for an event that airs at 2am.

Just curious what time did the coverage finish ? I’m thinking to set timer on my recorder but don’t want it to cut off too early in the end

M 400m IM = what a contrast from 2021 to 2022.
Tokyo: Fun from a spectator standpoint, but the times were markedly off for all of the elite players.
Budapest: Not a close race by the end, and almost a yawnfest in that respect, but what an electric performance by the Top 3. Even Chase was blown away by the time he could still deliver for 3rd.
Amazing swims! We were spoiled by Phelps, Lochte, and Cseh! Glad to see such amazing swimmers stepping up big time!
Similar times for the top 3 here… we getting spoiled again, but maybe for not as long a stretch. 🙂

So we’re stuck hoping the US medals in every event so NBC puts up the replay. That sucks.

Not only that, there is no replay at all that I can see. And Foxtel doesn’t get 9Gem so can’t even record it overnight. Sigh.

Yes it’s good, and a relief. Though would be nice if it could happen before 11.30ish! That is a long time (almost 7 hours after session ends) to avoid hearing any results…
Haha yeah I wish they would do medal ceremony clips as well.. love seeing their reaction when they get their medals and inspect it on the podium.. bah first world problems haha
Also, it looks like they are only posting vids of events involving Australians, so no M50FL, and only 1 semi each of the W100FL, M100BRS and W200IM.

Chase is a class act. His interview was encouraging, insightful, and funny. It was more than just the typical platitudes and I enjoyed it.
