There are only a few new scratches for the first prelims session of the 2022 World Championships in Budapest. The long-awaited meet will kick off with seven individual events: the women’s 200 IM, men’s 400 free, women’s 100 fly, men’s 50 fly, women’s 400 free, men’s 100 breast, and men’s 400 IM.
As we reported earlier in this week, #27 Kristof Milak and #10 Kyle Chalmers have already scratched the 50 fly. Simona Quadarellaand Fernando Scheffer dropped out of the 400 free as well. We also knew the 400 IM would be missing Great Britain’s Duncan Scott who withdrew from the meet in order to prioritize his health after being diagnosed with COVID-19 in early June.
New scratches include #22 Gabriel Santos and #30 Joshua Liendo in the 50 fly. They are both still set to swim the 100 free on Tuesday where Liendo is ranked 11th and Santos is ranked 18th.
The men’s 400 free took a hit from two swimmers who withdrew from the competition after being diagnosed with COVID-19 days before the meet: Venezuela’s Alfonso Mestre and Peru’s Joaquin Vargas. They were seeded 18th and 33rd, respectively. Joaquin Gonzalez of Argentina also tested positive at that time and dropped out of the meet. He was ranked #27 in the 400 IM.
