For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids,” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Ups” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Mids” to B finalists, and “Downs” to C finalists.
The projected scores do not include diving.

The final day of competition is underway at the Men’s 2026 Big Ten Championships in Madison, and positions in team standings are firming up. Indiana extended their lead dramatically on Day 3 to 250 points over Michigan, and the Hoosiers have their fifth-consecutive conference title within grasp.
Indiana had another strong showing this morning, placing nine swimmers into ‘A’ finals and three into ‘B’ finals. The 200 IM will be their biggest individual event of the night with three swimmers in the ‘A’ final, led by top seed Owen McDonald. The Hoosiers are also ranked 1st in the 400 free relay.
Michigan secured 14 scoring swims in finals tonight and is slated to expand its lead over Ohio State. The Wolverines will have seven lanes in ‘A’ finals–three of which are in the 200 IM–two in ‘B’ finals, and five in ‘C’ finals.
Northwestern had its best prelims session of the meet yet, and is set to make some serious moves up in the team standings tonight. They earned 14 scoring swims: five in ‘A’ finals, two in ‘B’ finals, and seven in ‘C’ finals. Their marquee events will be the 100 free and 200 back, where they have two swimmers apiece in the ‘A’ final heats. Our projections show that both Northwestern and USC could overtake Purdue tonight.
Ohio State did what they needed to do this morning, claiming three ‘A’ final slots and six ‘B’ finals. The Buckeyes are projected to comfortably defend their 3rd-place position over Wisconsin.
