The Speedo Sectionals in Indianapolis and Elkhart, IN concluded last night. Bailey Andison, an IU post-grad, stole headlines when she opened up the finals session with a 2:09.99 200 IM. The swim made her the #2 Canadian performer all-time in the event, and the #4 performer in the world this year. Andison concluded a great meet with the swim, setting herself up to go into the Canadian Trials in May with some momentum.
Michigan post-grad Tommy Cope won the men’s 200 IM with a 2:01.93, marking a season best by well over 2 seconds. Cope had a lifetime best of 2:00.40, which he swam in 2019. Will Modglin, a Zionsville Swim Club 16-year-old, continued to drop massive amounts of time, taking 2nd with a 2:03.16. The swim marked a 5 second drop for Modglin, and marked a new Olympic Trials Wave I cut. Modglin was just narrowly off the Wave II cut of 2:03.02.
Zach Apple, IU Pro swimmer, took the men’s 100 free with a 48.89, marking a new season best. Apple’s swim was his first under 49 seconds this year, inching him closer to his lifetime best of 47.69 as we approach the US Olympic Trials in approximately 10 weeks. Apple is among the top contenders to make the men’s 4×100 free relay, and is in play to finish in the top 2 and make the Olympic Team in the individual 100 as well.
OLY 17-year-old Lucy Malys continued to pick up Olympic Trials cuts left and right, taking the women’s 1500 free with a 16:47.56. The swim marked a huge drop for Malys, as she entered the meet with a personal best of 17:03.20. She dipped under the Olympic Trials Wave I cut of 16:49.19, but was a little off the Wave II cut of 16:44.60. She swam a very consistent racing, splitting 8:22.97 on the first 750, and 8:24.59 on the 2nd 750.
Louisville Pro Kelsi Dahlia took the women’s 100 free in a tight finish. Dahlia swam a 56.02, which was just off her season best of 55.53, and well off her lifetime best of 53.87. Indiana Swim Club 16-year-old Kristina Paegle took 2nd with a 56.03, just 0.01 seconds behind Dahlia, although they were swimming at separate sites. Paegle’s time marked a personal best by 0.19 seconds. She already had the Wave I cut in the event with her previous best, and she’s now within half a second of the Wave II cut (55.56).
The goat Dean Farris will take both 1st and 2nd in the 100 at trials.
Zapple and Pepperoni have been consistent.
Go Zach! Easy speed
Kristina Paegle swims for Indiana Swim Club not Club Wolverine…A little Big Ten club rivalry slip-up there. 🙂
Thanks for the great coverage of this meet!
Somewhere out in the world. There is somebody with the name Zach Orange, and then Zach Grape, and then Zach Banana.
There’s almost definitely a Zach Orange. Probably a Zach Cherry. A Zach Berry for sure.
Fruit Salad. Yummy Yummy.
100% there’s a Zach Berry
Zorange rolls of the tongue quite nicely. Zgrape and Zbanana not really. Maybe in a Balkan language they sound okay.
Zach apple the giant! Hopefully one day he will break 48
He has, quite a few times!
He has already been less than 48 seconds many times.
