Sarah Sjostrom Doing 3 Leg Workouts Per Day, Kick is Stronger Than Ever

We sat down with world record-holder Sarah Sjostrom, who is on the road to recovery after breaking her elbow. Sjostrom gave us an update on her status, saying she’s back in the pool and kicking about 3-3.5 kilometers daily. However, Sjostrom is also going to the gym and doing a heavy leg lift, then getting in a cycling workout daily as well, making her legs very tired by the end of the day. Sjostrom says she’s never focused this much on her legs before and normally she just relies on her upper body strength in her swimming. This could be a revamped Sjostrom once she is allowed to swim 100%, a scary thought considering she already holds 6 individual world records.

Dawn Fraser came back in 64 from an almost broken neck, Petria Thomas had 3 shoulder reconstructions both still won Olympic gold, its about the adversity and daily struggles that makes a Champion Athlete!

Too bad Missy gave up after 2018 and didn’t get the other surgery.

Based on her back injury at ISL, you have to wonder whether she was in such great shape anyway prior to the elbow accident. Also, she passed out on deck at WC 2019 when she had to swim a longer race, so maybe the leg strength will help.

This would be challenging, but it would be really interesting to:
1) Summarize top athletes’ performance post-injury
2) Summarize NCAA athletes’ performance after COVID disruptions (e.g. Michigan etc.)

I wonder if part of this is putting on a brave face of positivity for her sponsors or even herself. Big injury with terrible timing. I sure hope she can be at 100%. I am a big fan!

phelps broke his wrist in the lead up to beijing and was leg intensive during recovery. worked out pretty well, so id say its noteworthy

I think body strength is the easy portion for the recovery with muscle memory and her top-tier nutrition. How to put together a race after a big injury (which absolutely changes her stroke) is the difficult part.
