Kyle Chalmers Fires 47.35 Worlds Warning Shot For Fresh PB

2019 AUSTRALIAN WORLD SWIMMING TRIALS

Taking back over the #1 swimmer in the world status in the men’s 100m free is Kyle Chalmers, the reigning Olympic champion in the event.

Competing on night 5 of the 2019 Aussie World Trials, the 20-year-old delivered big-time to rack up his 2nd World Championships qualifying event, hitting the wall in a massive 47.35 for gold.

His time overtakes his recent 47.48 thrown down at Aussie Nationals as his new career-fastest, displacing Russian Vladislav Grinev who had beaten out Chalmers’ previous PB in 47.48 just days later to take over the world rankings throne.

Still a long way to go before Tokyo (the US has a couple of times turned things around in a year), but that is an accurate list as things stand.

Agree on everything except for the W100 breast. I’d say the chances are better than in the W400 im

Isn’t this what the great Australian 100fr have been doing for the last 8ish years?
Throwing down amazing times at Aussie nationals/trials then not being able to do it again at the big show
McEvoy, Magnusson, hopefully not Chalmers

Hopefully not. Chalmers dropped a lot from trials and rio so I think he’ll be the same if not faster.

Yes, amazing how some forget. Magnusson lost by 0.01 second to a once in lifetime swim by Adrian. Still do not know what happened to McEvoy. However Chalmers is the Australian who is the CURRENT 100 Free champion, the fastest swimmer in the world.

I Know you mean men, but you can throw in Trickett and Campbell while you are there (sadly for this Australian).

We can’t because you are brainwashed. He can only medal in one event right now so I would say every swimmer that can medal in two events is better. So a one medal athlete would need to be extremely dominant in that event to be consider a top 5 athlete and we all know the only athlete that meets that criteria is Adam Peaty

Robbos

Nathan Adrian only medal in 1 event in London & was regarded in top 5 swimmers. The 100 free is the blue riband, just like in Athletics, the winners only need to win 1 event. When you win the 100 free, which every person swims, you are 1 of the best.

I disagree, you could win the 100 free and have two other guys within .05 of you. If thesecond and third place swimmers in that scenario also medal in other races I’d give them the edge.

Haven’t you heard the 50 is the new 100. Proud might have a more dominant swim with a 21.05. Its all subjective and Chalmers could be top 5, I think he needs to race more outside of Australia to get there.

Anthony Ervin would disagree…

Point exactly!!! Ervin is not the fastest swimmer. He’s a fast starter, goes flat out then dies. Great for 50s.

Blackflag82

fastest starter – fastest person to 15m
fastest swimmer – who moves the fastest over the water (don’t confuse this with who can go fastest longest).

50 free final from Rio-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PAXVy0WViE

around the 4:20ish mark they’re starting. When Ervin hits 15m he’s in 5th by half a stroke, and by Ervin’s standards, Rio was a good start.

I would have Chalmers ahead of all those swimmers, Peaty great swimmer, so dominant, but you can’t compare 100 Breast to 100 free. Murphy, great backstroker, but depth in 200 back not as high as depth in 200 free, Kalisz, medley swimmer, can be challenged by Larkin at worlds, no way in Australia is Larkin even close to Chalmers as a swimmer. Dressel has not beaten Chalmers, no Olympic gold individually, potentially better but not now, Sun Yang, only one with legit claims, let see in 200 free at worlds, but does have huge drug cloud hanging over him.

Blackflag82
Reply to  Robbos

So in other words, Chalmers’ gold medal from 3 years ago and a world leading time a month before Worlds in one event trumps world records, world championship medals, and multiple event medal contenders? I’d say your criteria is more than a bit skewed

Robbos
Reply to  Blackflag82

You forgot to mention gold medal & world leading time in the 100 freestyle. Next time you go to a swim meet, especially a junior, but even the seniors, see how many lineup for the 100 free, all the breaststrokers, backstrokers, butterflers, even the distance swimmers. Whereas the 100 free guy, just sticks with the best event.

Taa
Reply to  Robbos

The 100 free guy sticks with the 100 free because he sucks at everything else. That makes him the best swimmer?

Who is the best at athletics? Yes the 100 metres sprinter. People who don’t know athletics knows Bolt, they have no idea who won the 400 hurdles or the Pole vault or even the 800.

I can ignore your troll logic for the others, you’re rabid if you’re going to say he’s better than Peaty, the fastest 100 breastroker ever by over a second who has pretty much always had the top time in the world for the past 5 years. Chalmers would have to go 45 to even be close to that margin of excellence. Either you’re delusionally biased from Chalmers or towards freestylers, which is it?

Blackflag82
Reply to  Robbos

People know Bolt for the same reason non-swimmers know Phelps…because their performances transcended their sport. People who don’t know swimming don’t know who Chalmers is…If you’re going to argue that people outside the sport knowing about them is key to who the best is, then Schooling is way better than Chalmers.

Missing the point, go back thru your Olympic history, Popov, Van den Hoogenband, Spitz, Weismuller, Duke Kahanamoku, Biondi all great swimmers who won the 100 free.

haha yes i was teasing Robbos putting MA on the list. He probably overall has a lot of top 25 rankings in many events but I don’t think that is the formula to make the top 5 or 10 swimmers in the world. He will final a couple 50s and he could final the 100Breast so I don’t think he is that far out of the conversation if you value high placement in many different events.

How is Dressel not better than Chalmers. He is at the same level if not better in the 100 free. He is a favorite in the 50 free and is the overwheming favorite in the 100 fly.

Benedict Arnold Schwarzenegger

You can’t possibly compare the 100 fly to the 100 free. Roobos has already clearly established that. Also, we’ve already logically proven that Peaty is also worse than Chalmers (because freestyle is inherently super to breaststroke) and Peaty is better at 100br than Dressel is at 100fl, ergo ipso facto Dressel is worse than Chalmers

Who was faster at Pan Pacs? Campbell was and she is faster than Simone this year so far. So you have to go with Sjostrom, Campbell, Ledecky, King, Hozzsu. I would sub Ikee in for King if she didnt get sick. Second 5 Titmus, Ohashi, Manuel, Baker maybe Ruck

He’s also behind McEvoy’s best, so is Dressel but, continues to beat them both & has Olympic gold in the 100 free, where neither of them has & is also the youngest. There is a lot to like about the hype.
