Aimee Canny had quite a showing in Indianapolis this past weekend. Swimming in her first Pro Swim of the season, Canny broke South African records in the 200 Free (1:56.59) and 200 IM (2:09.99) while clocking PBs in the 100 Breast (1:05.97) and 200 Breast (2:23.61). Canny says she’s been training in the distance group at UVA this season and it has not only helped her endurance, but her speed as well.

A few things:
Technique determines speed in swimming MUCH more than “sprint training” does.
Great technique is not achieved by doing less yards, or 1200m a week.
It needs to be practiced, a lot, and often.
You don’t need to be super strong or have heavy max lifts in the gym to swim fast.
The strength/power needed to swim really fast is not particularly high in relative terms.
Cam Mc is amazing but copy him at your peril.
Distance can mean anything. Unless she is posting her workouts, we have no idea what she really means by doing more distance.
Comparing her to McEvoy, who won’t even do a 100m free, is ridiculous.
Cam Mcevoy: Heres how I became the fastest man alive. No more garbage yardage.
Everyone else: wow doing sessions with the distance freestylers has really helped my speed! Maybe I will try Open Water swimming to really push my speed to the next level!
Hopefully Alex follows her example
your obsession with hating on her is clinical
It’s not “hating” to make a well-intentioned suggestion that, by the way, many other people interested in AW’s development share. Word choice is critical if you want your comments regarded seriously.
Eddie, it’s not hating. Alex is clearly a more talented swimmer than Aimee and swam circles around her at Virginia, but one has improved recently while the other has not
Lemme try to summarize some thoughts I put below, and I’ll use CAPS for added effect:
AIMEE CANNY IS NOT A SPRINTER.
Thank you.
Carry on.
Except she has split 21.65 scy. Not bad for a mid-distance / breast / IM swimmer.
Will she be staying at UVA as a pro?
For the near future, yeah
So funny. Every time a guy goes faster it’s my insane lifting. For girls I’m doing more distance sets
Hmmm. I’m really struggling with all of this.
Because…200m is…you know…DISTANCE!!!
Even 100m has a sizeable endurance component to it.
I mean, how did this become Rocket Science for some athletes?
In what world is a 2 minute race considered long distance? In athletics 800-1500m are middle distance. 1500m is a sustained sprint more than a distance race. Energy systems cant be that much diferent in both sports duh
Primary differences: medium the athletes travel through and rate of respiration. Anything else? Maybe muscle groups? (Not an exercise science expert)
Did I say “long distance”?
I spent 45 years training for and coaching 1500m run, and now I find out that it is “a sustained sprint”? 😂
Even the 100m swim, at 45sec+ ish duration, requires a sizeable endurance component, to get through the last 25m-35m.
People downvoting you but youre completely right. The training and energy demands for 50 sprints vs 100 and especially 200 races are significantly different.
Speed through endurance
Doesn’t it make more sense that endurance comes through speed?
How can you go sub 2 in the 200 if you can’t go sub 58ish in the 100?
How can you hold a pace you don’t have
Sunion gets it.
But 200m!!
