The official psych sheets for the 2018 NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming & Diving Championships have been released, and our math from Tuesday held up. All but 2 swimmers on the 37 line were invited, with those two, Caitlynn Moon from Texas A&M and Paige Kelly from Kentucky serving as the first two alternates to earn invites.
A refresher on how that process works: The NCAA will go through, event by event, and add one swimmer to each, until a certain “line” (aka, all 30th-ranked swimmers) puts the field over the maximum 281 individual entries (322 total minus 41 places for divers). At that point, swimmers will be invited based on who is the closest to the NCAA Championship Record in their event from the next line (in this case, line 37). The Stanford Cardinal continue to roll on with 18 swimmers invited already, and that doesn’t include divers – which have yet to compete at Zones, where they earn their qualifying. Stanford senior Kassidy Cook placed 2nd on the 1-meter and 3rd on the 3-meter at last weekend’s Pac-12 Championships, and at least one of freshman Mia Paulsen and sophomore Haley Farnsworth is likely to qualify as well (with each diver counting as half of a roster spot). Cook, a U.S. Olympian who only competes in springboard, scored 27 points at last year’s NCAA Championships, so it seems probable that Stanford will choose divers over at least 1 swimmer. Stanford has at least 2 invited swimmers who aren’t seeded to score.

It will be an interesting comparison of how many swimmers in each school got invited last year compared to this year. I know there are new recruits each year that change that number, but bit does give us a way to see each program’s progression.
Texas A&M looks great for the meet, if their IM and Breaststroke groups show up, they will be competing for a top 3 spot.
If all of their swimmers perform to the best of their ability and they pull off a couple upsets (like Sydney Pickrem winning an event or two) I think they have a chance to challenge Cal. It seems far-fetched but it’s not out the question.

Very impressive 18 qualifiers for Stanford even though many of their recruits could make NCAAs with their high school times. Also an impressive 16 from A&M, seems they also have a big number going year after year. Then 12 invitees for multiple programs is going to keep the top ten spots (besides #1) interesting, can’t wait to watch!
Texas A&M is forever such an underrated program. They always have great depth along with such a knowledgeable head coach! Nevertheless, I heard something about how their recruiting class of this past year wasn’t even ranked in the top 20.
The 2017 recruiting class I believe was ranked 3rd. Their 2018 recruiting class has not been ranked but will probably be about 7th or 8th (not because it’s not a great class, but because the class as a whole was so deep that a lot of schools recruited great classes). Their 2016 recruiting class was indeed unranked and has been performing great this year.
honestly, emma carlton was underrated, and she’s an a&m commit. wouldn’t be surprised to see her thrive after a year there.
Part of the reason Emma Carlton was underrated is because she dropped a lot of time senior year, not that she wasn’t a great recruit before then. The A&M recruit I really have my eye on for next year is Kylie Powers. After how much time Anna Belousova dropped this year already, I’m excited to see what Powers can do after a year at A&M. Their breaststroke group is really special.
That’s a good sign for the Texas A&M program that they got 16 qualifiers and 1 on the Alternate List.
Stanford is “overloaded” with qualifiers. A hollow feeling no doubt for the Girls That Don’t Get to Go.
Which qualifiers didn’t get to go?
Depends on diving.
Katie Glavinovich/Lauren Green maybe (although they are on the invite list)…. they’re not quite at scoring level yet.
Especially since it will likely be “girl,” not “girls.”
