The 16th-place tie in the men’s 200 free heats has been decided without a swim-off, with Egypt’s Marwan El-Kamash advancing to the semifinal over Austria’s Felix Aubock.
El-Kamash and Aubock both went 1:47.40s this morning to finish in a tie for 16th place. Start lists for tonight’s final show El-Kamash taking lane 8 in the B final with Aubock listed as the first alternate. The University of Michigan, Aubock’s training home, confirmed on Twitter that he has scratched the event to prepare for the 800 free, which will take place tomorrow morning.
Aubock was a finalist in the 400 free last night – in fact, he was the top prelims qualifier before eventually taking 5th. El-Kamash was 9th, just missing the championship final, though he did break his own Egyptian record with his prelims 400 free swim.
El-Kamash will become just the second African swimmer to make a final or semifinal so far at this year’s World Championships. Day 1 saw El-Kamash stuck in 9th and Farida Osman in 17th in the 100 fly, with medal hopeful Cameron van der Burgh scratching the 100 breast for South Africa. But on day 2, South Africa’s Myles Brown made semifinals in the 200 with a 13th-place finish, and it now appears El-Kamash will join him in tonight’s semis.
