FINA has announced that five cities have put in bids to host the 2022 and 2024 Short Course World Championships.

  • Kazan, Russia
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Switzerland
  • Germany
  • Chinese Taipai (Taiwan/Republic of China)

Russia

Russia is one of two of the bidding countries that has put forth a potential city in which the event will be hosted. Kazan is the capital of Russia and has a population of over one million. Kazan held the 2015 Long Course World Championships. The meet was held in the Kazan Arena, which can be converted to a short course pool making it a potential venue for the meet if Russia wins the bid.

Hungary

Hungary is the only country besides Russia who has already suggested a city in which to hold Short Course Worlds. Budapest, Hungary is the the capital of country with a population of 1.7 million. Budapest is holding the 2017 Long Course World Championships. The pool for the event is currently under construction, but could also be a potential venue for Short Course Worlds.

Switzerland

Switzerland has not yet named a city in which they propose to hold the meet. If they win the bid, it will be the first large international swim meet held by the country. They are the one of two countries bidding to host this meet that will not have held a World Championship meet before. Though Switzerland has never hosted the meet before, they have had swimmers competing in multiple meets at the international level.

Germany

Germany held the 1978 Long Course World Championships in Berlin. Berlin, the capital, may be a potential city in which Short Course Worlds will be held if Germany were to win the bid, however Germany has not officially stated where they propose to hold the meet.

Chinese Taipai (Taiwan/Republic of China)

Taiwan also has not yet stated in which city they would host Short Course Worlds. There has yet to be a World Championships held in Taiwan and the country does not have a lot of swimmers with experience at the international level, however hosting the meet could potentially put Taiwan on the map for swimming.

Each country will give their formal bid to the FINA Bureau in July of 2017. The winners of the bids for 2022 and 2024 will be announced in 2017 at the Long Course World Championships in Budapest.
