Junior World Record Holder Claire Adams Commits To Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns turned a good recruiting class into an outstanding one by nabbing SwimSwam’s #5 recruit in the class of 2016, Carmel Swim Club’s Claire Adams.

Adams, who just ended her summer with a stint on the U.S. team at the Junior World Championships, is the class’s best pure backstroker and a hugely-talented pickup for a Texas squad that’s on the rise under coach Carol Capitani.

Adams shares the Junior World Record in the 100 backstroke with Australia’s Minna Atherton, who just topped her for gold at Junior Worlds. Adams was also 5th in the 200 back.

In terms of the NCAA’s short course yards system, Adams is equally impressive. She comes in the door with times that should score at the NCAA Championships, and will represent a major player for Texas immediately.

Adams’ Top Times

  • 100 yard back: 51.99
  • 100 meter back: 59.58
  • 200 yard back: 1:51.87
  • 200 meter back: 2:09.44
  • 100 yard free: 49.19
  • 200 yard free: 1:45.09
  • 200 yard IM: 2:00.45

Adams’ versatility makes her an outstanding all-around relay option for the Longhorns – she could contribute on any of the 5 relays, but is probably most valuable as a backstroker leading off the medleys and on the 800 free relay.

She’s the second top-20 recruit to choose Texas this season, with the Longhorns already getting a verbal commitment from #18 Lauren Case.

Adams is part of the loaded Carmel Swim Club and Carmel High School class in Indiana, arguably one of the best high school teams of all-time on the girls side. Adams will wrap up her senior year in Carmel before heading to Austin next fall to begin her career with the Longhorns in the 2016-2017 season.
