2017 W. NCAA Championships: Ledecky Downs Meet Record in 4:28.3

2017 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Stanford’s Katie Ledecky cruised to a 4:28.37 in prelims of the 500 free at the 2017 Women’s NCAA Championships. While Ledecky was a few seconds off her American Record time of 4:25.15 from last month’s Pac-12 Championships, she looked very smooth this morning en route to a new Meet Record.

Ledecky’s Splits By 100:

  • 1st 100 Split- 51.68
  • 2nd 100 Split- 54.13
  • 3rd 100 Split- 54.73
  • 4th 100 Split- 54.67
  • 5th 100 Split- 53.16
  • Final Time- 4:28.37

With that, Ledecky took down the former NCAA Meet Record of 4:30.37 done by Virginia’s Leah Smith at the 2015 meet. Smith set a new Pool Record this morning at 4:31.10 before Ledecky took it down in the next heat. That’s within a second of Smith’s best time and faster than the 4:31.33 she swam to win the meet last season.

Ledecky now has all 10 of the fastest performances ever in this race.

The last 2 turns with her underwaters showed just how much she had left in the tank.

Unreal! It’s like normal for her to break 4:30. She will go under 4:25 barrier tonight.
