According to Sports Business Daily writer Tripp Mickle, Michael Phelps’ endorsement with the world’s largest swimwear brand Speedo that ended at the end of 2013 has not been renewed and the two sides have parted ways.
In the story, Speedo commented that “When Speedo signed Michael to his first endorsement deal at age 15, becoming his first-ever sponsor, we believed that he had the potential to change the sport of swimming forever. He has certainly achieved that, becoming undeniably the most successful Olympian of all time. … Though the partnership with Michael has ended, he will always be a part of Speedo’s history and we wish him well in the future.”
This raises the question of whose suit, exactly, Phelps will be wearing when he hits the water this weekend at the Mesa Grand Prix. It has been long speculated that he might be working with Baltimore-based Under Armour, who has sponsored Phelps’ ‘dryland’ clothing for the last several years, to launch a performance swimwear line as well. Thus far, however, Under Armour does not have a FINA-approved suit for the year 2014.
Of course, if a company really wanted to keep a suit under wraps, there would be enough loopholes to do it without revealing it through FINA’s public list. That includes setting up another company under whose name the suit could be submitted for approval before transferring branding to the new company upon launch.
At any rate, regardless of whose suit Phelps wears (or if he signs a new agreement at all), it will be an interesting experiment at how much pull the post-comeback Phelps has upon the market. Of course, his level of success will have an impact on sales, and much more so upon sales within the swimming niche where his post-comeback results will be scrutinized more closely than they would to, for example, the Subway audience.
Update: in his pre-Grand Prix press conference, Phelps referred to himself as a ‘free agent’ for suit deals.
Uh Oh! Underarmour in swimwear? Can you say Olympic speedskating? And how did that work out?
Cate is right. USA olympic speed skating went pretty bad and if you think of it that way then under amour will be pretty bad in the water.
How about the @&$!#% who started Under Armour can get off his butt and bring back swimming to the college he went to?! Enough money to go around (wasted on ugly football unis) and a chance to save the sport, nothing happens. The very thought of UA getting into the suit business pi$$es me off. If MP is going to get UA to start suits, part of his signing with them should include bringing back the swim and dive teams. He wants to make an impact on the sport, here’s his chance!
And if he wears an Under Armour suit and swims slow he can blame the suit like the U.S. speed skating team did in Sochi!
It’s possible that he could wear an Arena or other manufacturer’s suit with an Under Armour logo on it.
I think that may be a violation in certain swimming jurisdictions, only a small “manufacturer” logo is allowed to be showing the suit, correct? Otherwise, you’d be seeing other logos on more suits. Swapping manufacturers? That seems disingenuous, how would callaway feel if you etched off their logos and pasted Nike swooshes over them on golf clubs; sounds like a lawsuit waiting.
Nike would probably DISH out 40-60 Mil for this guys face.
Guys don’t act surprised I’ve commented on this multiple times that he is ending his contract with Speedo. Again, he will sign a huge contract with Under Armor and launch a new product called “Aqua Armor”. The deal includes a life long guarantee of income even after retirement. Another I told you so folks

no one has acted surprised
Hopefully he wears something polyurethane.
If he commits to rio 2016, companies will be lining up to sponsor him. He doesn’t even need endorsements at this point.
Agreed, it seems likely to me that Phelps terminated the Speedo contract as they still could have made money off of him. If it isn’t UnderArmour, then who else did he terminate the contract for, and why are they waiting??
I agree. It would a feather in their cap to sign Michael Phelps
