Distance free and open water star Chenoa Devine will stay in-state for her college career after verbally committing to the California Golden Bears.
Devine, a high school senior in the class of 2016, is USA Junior National Teamer in both pool swimming and open water. She qualified in the long course meter 400 freestyle and also made the team in open water based on her results from the 2015 Open Water Nationals.
For an open water specialist, Devine has remarkably good mid-sprint range in the pool, which should make her an excellent asset in the sprint-heavy NCAA. She’s a 5-time section champ in California high school swimming, three times in the 500 free and twice in the 200.
Devine’s Top Times
- 1650 free: 16:20.33
- 500 free: 4:46.41
- 200 free: 1:48.53
- 100 free: 51.85
Devine is a great get for Cal based on need – the Bears will lose their top distance swimmer when former NCAA record-holder Cierra Runge transfers to Wisconsin after sitting out this season. Devine should help immediately fill in that distance gap.
She should continue to be an intriguing open water prospect as well. Devine was 13th in the 10K at the U.S. National Championships in 2015, which essentially served as both the nation’s World Championship Trials and its Olympic Trials. Devine was the 4th-best 18-and-under finisher in that event.
Currently, Devine is wrapping up her senior season in Davis, California, where she swims for the Davis Arden Racing Team, also known as DART, under coaches Billy Doughty and Ray Wieser.
She joins a Cal class that is already looking pretty well-rounded. In addition to Devine’s distance prowess, the team recruited backstroker/freestyler Aislinn Light and all-around star Keaton Blovad, our 13th-ranked prospect in the class.
