NC State had a huge morning, earning 16 individual swims in tonight’s finals session. It looks like diving is not going to hurt NC State too bad. If they continue this pace, they will easily outrun Virginia Tech’s 247 point diving advantage. Virginia Tech had a good morning as well, earning 7 final swims, 5 of which are A final swims.
We took the average points for each final. Scoring in the middle of the A final, between fourth and fifth place, would be an average of 25.5 points. Following the same pattern, a B final swim is worth roughly 14.5 points and a C final swim is worth roughly 4.5 points.
To beat Virginia Tech, NC State needs to average about 75 points per day more than Virginia Tech for the rest of the meet. NC State has set themselves up very well to do so this morning. If you average out their points based on the ups/mids/downs, NC State should score 299 points from their individual swims alone. Virginia Tech has set themselves up to score roughly 156 points. That will not be enough to keep them ahead of NC State if they continue at the same pace over the course of the meet.
That will keep Virginia Tech ahead of Louisville, however. Louisville has 9 final swims, but only 3 are A final swims. The Cardinals are expected to score about 163 points. To reel in Virginia Tech, though, they will need to average about 70 more points per day for the rest of the meet.

What’s up with Pittsburgh. They had a great recruiting year and the program is fully funded.
Pitt’s swimmers are dropping form seed times for the most part, but the meet has just gotten incredibly fast. NCSU swimming out of this world, but everyone has gotten faster – – would you ever think that a 20.33 in the 50 free would only be good for 37th place? Would you think that a 1:45.87 200 IM would not final? The ACC meet has become, in my opinion, one of the deepest meets around.
Wow. Great work swimswam! This will be a fun parody to watch.
