Viviane Jungblut Cracks Brazilian Record in 1500 SCM Free Ahead of Olympics

Distance swimmer Viviane Jungblut has broken the Brazilian National Record in the women’s 1500 short course meter freestyle. She swam a 15:55.07 on Saturday at the Rio de Janeiro State Championship meet at the Vasco da Gama pool.

The time crushes her old record of 16:03.29 that was set at the 2018 Jose Finkel Trophy.

The result comes less than a month after breaking the long course National Record at the last-chance Brazilian Olympic Trial meet in early June.

Jungblut missed the initial Brazilian Olympic Trials qualifying event as one of 5 athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 heading into the event. That group was given one last chance to “bump” other qualifiers, and she was successful, swimming 16:14.00.

Jungblut received her vaccine on July 1.

According to hand-written splits for her Saturday swim taken by her coach and posted on social media by Alex Pussieldi, Jungblut split her race, by 500 meters:

  • 5:18
  • 5:19
  • 5:16.60

By comparison, in her previous record setting swim, her splits were:

  • 5:19.70
  • 5:21.99
  • 5:21.60

Pussieldi also reports that a post-race lactate reading of 5.7mmol/liter was recorded. That’s a relatively-low reading for a high-effort output, which is a positive indicator for Jungblut ahead of the Olympics.
