UC San Diego Claim First-Ever Wins Over UCSB In Sweep of Gauchos

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego swimming earned the program’s first victories over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The women topped the Gauchos, 159-103 and the men earned a 152-110 victory.

Five swimmers earned new National Invitational Championship qualifying (B-cut) times including Juli Arzave (1000-yard freestyle, 9:53.53), Will Blake (50-yard freestyle, 21.17), Tyler James (100-yard backstroke, 49.08), Hayden Johnson (1000-yard freestyle, 9:31.89), and Andrija Petkovic (200-yard freestyle, 1:40.11).

MEN
The men earned the top spot in nine events on the day, including both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

UC San Diego placed first in the 50-, 100-, 200-, and 500-yard freestyle with Spencer Daily (20.04) taking the 50- and Andrija Petkovic (45.29) taking the 100-. Ivan Kurakin won both the 200- (1:38.09) and the 500- (4:32.40) for the Tritons.

Tyler James finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with his B-cut time of 49.08 and Daily took the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.19. Aidan Simpson placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:01.17.

Two scholar-athletes recorded lifetime bests, including Will Blake (50-yard free style, 21.17) and Grant Reeves (200-yard butterfly, 1:53.63).

WOMEN
The women finished first in 11 of their events on the day, including the 200-yard medley relay, with the squad of Jordan PhillipsKatja PavicevicMiranda RennerBrittney Miles (1:43.73) taking the top spot.

UC San Diego placed first in the 50-, 200-, 500-, and 1000-yard freestyle. Mackenzie Lee took the 50- with a time of 23.94 and Aneta Wyzga took the 200- with a time of 1:52.35. Juli Arzave took both the 500- and 1000-, and the Tritons swept the 500- podium with Arzave, Ellie Whitney and Wyzga.

Jordan Phillips took both the 100-yard backstroke (56.64) and butterfly (55.90), while Katja Pavicevic took the 100-yard breaststroke. Pavicevic also finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.78 and the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:27.31.

The Tritons will head on the road to St. George, Utah for the Dixie State Invitational, Nov. 18-20.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swim teams both dropped their dual meets against conference opponent UC San Diego on Saturday at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Tritons picked up their first ever victories over the Gauchos, with the women’s side finishing at 159-103 and the men’s side ending up at 152-110.

Despite the loss, freshman Kyle Brill had an exceptional performance, racking up three first-place finishes, touching first in the 100 Breast (56.24), 200 Back (1:48.25), and 400 IM (3:58.03). Junior Dominic Falcon finished first in the 200 Fly (1:49.78), as well as second in both the 500 Free (4:36.43) and 400 IM (3:58.91). Freshman Taber daCosta touched first in the 1000 Free (9:25.51), while also adding a third-place finish in the 500 Free (4:36.49).

Senior Tim Lee finished second in the 100 Fly (49.43) and third in the 50 Free (20.92). Austin SparrowShogo Moridaira, and Corban McIntosh each contributed second-place victories, while Matt Driscoll, Justin Hussong, and Justin Wong each had third-place finishes.

The 200 Fly was a highlight for the men, taking all of the top three spots.

On the women’s side, junior Maya Lee was a first-place finisher in the 200 Fly (2:03.70), while sophomore Reagan Nibarger took first in the 100 Free (51.94) and second in the 50 Free (24.05). Senior Molly McCance had a second-place win in the 200 Free (1:52.91) while taking third in the 100 Free (52.86). Tyryn EmpremsilapaPaige GambettaMichelle Tekawy, and Dora Seggelke each contributed second-place finishes. Sophie RyanKristin Bartlett, and Katie Nugent each had two third-place finishes while Maelynn Lawrence had one of her own.

The women ended the day on a high note, with the “A” relay team of Nibarger, Marriott HoffmannHannah Joseph, and McCance finishing first in the 400 Free Relay (3:30.75).

The Gauchos have some time off from competition before heading to the Dixie State Invite in Utah from November 18-20.
