Regan Smith is the queen of consistency.
On Friday night in the 100 back finals of the TYR Pro Swim Series in Westmont, Smith threw down a winning time of 57.90, which beats her former Pro Series record time of 57.92 from this March. This swim marks Smith’s third 57-point swim of the 2022-23 long course season, as in addition to her March swim, she also swam a 57.95 at the U.S. Open last December.
Smith’s three 57-point in-season 100 back swims are impressive considered that only three women in history (her included) have been sub-58. She remains the second-fastest performer of the season, just 0.06 seconds behind Australia’s Kaylee McKeown.

In Smith’s race tonight, she went out in a 28.13 before coming home in a 29.77, posting the fastest opening and closing splits in the field. In comparison, she split her old Pro Swim record 27.82/30.10, showing that she put more emphasis on her back half Friday night. She won by over a second, as second-place finisher Isabelle Stadden clocked a time of 59.38. Smith and Stadden were the only two swimmers in the field under a minute.
Impressively enough, Smith’s 100 back swim came after she raced the 200 fly earlier in the same session. She won her 200 fly race in a time of 2:07.92.

It’s is a big deal since three female swimmers have posted sub 58 performances. Kylie Masse has posted sub 58 performances three times, all in calendar year 2021.
