On the final day of racing at the 2021 Australian Olympic Trials, we were treated to 3 straight Australian record-breaking swims to open up the last session.
First, Kaylee McKeown downed her own national record and Commonwealth record in the 200 backstroke with a 2:04.28, followed by Matthew Temple who lowered the men’s 100 butterfly to a 50.45 from Andrew Lauterstein’s 50.85 in 2009. Adding to the action, Ariarne Titmus took down her 3rd Australian record of the meet with an 8:15.57 800 freestyle, making her the 2nd fastest woman in the world this year.
All three swimmers’ record-breaking swims were under the respective Olympic-qualifying times and each represented the 3rd event for which they are qualified to race in Tokyo.
McKeown has now added her name to the roster for 100/200 back and the 200 IM, Temple the 100/200 fly and the 200 free, and Titmus the 200/400/800 freestyles.
