Pennsylvania HS State Champion Kimberly Shannon Commits To Pitt (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Kimberly Shannon has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Pittsburgh, beginning in the fall of 2024. Shannon is currently a junior at Lewisburg Area High School in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She also trains and competes year-round with Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA, located in Sunbury, Pennsylvania.

Shannon shared her announcement on Instagram:

Shannon is coming off of a highly successful showing at the Pennsylvania High School State Championships (2A), where she won the 500 free for the third year in a row with a season best time of 4:55.48. Additionally, Shannon was runner-up in the 200 IM, logging a season best time of 2:04.23 in finals.

Shannon also had a strong long course season, capping it off at the Futures Championships in Geneva. She earned her highest finish in the 200m backstroke, where she clocked a 2:21.71 to finish 17th overall. Prior to Futures, Shannon dropped over three seconds in the 200 back to record a 2:19.80.

Most recently, Shannon competed at the 2023 YMCA Nationals last week in Greensboro. Highlighting her week was the 1000 freestyle, where she dropped nearly four seconds to take 2nd with a final time of 10:01.65.

Top SCY Times:

  • 500 free – 4:51.98
  • 1000 free – 10:01.65
  • 1650 free – 17:23.11
  • 200 back – 1:58.97
  • 200 breast – 2:20.98
  • 200 IM – 2:01.20
  • 400 IM – 4:23.05

Pitt recently finished 11th out of 12 teams at the 2023 ACC Championships. With Shannon’s versatility it’s difficult to say which events she’ll focus on in college, but right now she’s closest to scoring range in 500 free and 200 back, where it took a 4:51.64 and 1:58.55 to advance.

Jacqueline Tinneney was Pitt’s lone finalist in the 500 freestyle, clocking a best time of 4:47.39 to win the C-final. Claire Jansen led the team in the 200 backstroke, placing 18th in finals with a personal best time of 1:56.06. Tinneney is a fifth year student now, and will not return next year which leaves a gap in the 500. Jansen, however, is only a freshman and will overlap with Shannon as they look to build depth in the 200 back.

Shannon is the first public commitment in the Panthers’ class of 2028.

Good start, Kimberly has a lot of potential and Chase will give her the work needed to score at ACC’s.
