INDIANAPOLIS – Oakland topped both the men’s and women’s Spring 2021 #HLSD Preseason Poll. The defending 2020 championship teams each earned six first-place votes, as voted by the League’s seven head swimming coaches.
The Golden Grizzlies (48 points) were the 2020 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Champions with Oakland winning their seventh men’s and women’s titles. Nine different #HLSD records were broken by Oakland throughout the four days of competitions between the men’s and women’s teams. The 2021 season will see the return of Swimmer of Meet & Athlete of the Year winners Susan LaGrand and Marko Khotynetskyi.
Cleveland State men’s (43 points) and women’s (42 points) teams were voted second by the League’s head coaches with each team earning a first place vote. The Vikings were the runner-up teams in the 2020 championships. Cleveland State returns men’s 200-yard IM champion and 2019-20 Horizon League Men’s Swim and Dive All-Academic Team member Timothy Kubacki.
Third place went to UIC (33 points). The Flames return Diver of the Meet honorees Felix LaFortune and Cydney Liebenberg, women’s 200-yard butterfly champion Lilly Culp and 2019-20 Horizon League Women’s Swim and Dive All-Academic Team member Anna Scovill this season.
The IUPUI men’s (28 points) and women’s (27 points) were voted fourth. Men’s 50-yard freestyle top three finisher Mason Jung and 2019-20 Horizon League Men’s Swim and Dive All-Academic Team members Tommy Lombardo and Dillon Stangeland return for the Jaguars.
Rounding out the Spring 2021 #HLSD Preseason Polls are Milwaukee (18 and 23 points) who was voted fifth, Green Bay (15 and 12 points) in sixth and Youngstown State seventh (11 points).
The 2021 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled for April 4-10, 2021 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis and will be hosted by IUPUI. More information can be found here.
