Minimal Scratches For Saturday Night Prelims In Mission Viejo

2021 PRO SWIM SERIES – MISSION VIEJO (#3)

There aren’t too many surprises in the heat sheets for Saturday night prelims at the 2021 Pro Swim Series, Mission Viejo.

As has been the case over the first few days of the meet, we won’t see top-seeded Simone Manuel race the 100 freestyle as she has scratched from the meet due to non-COVID-19 related illness. Along with Manuel, Mallory Comerford has been absent in Mission Viejo which means that she won’t swim the 100 freestyle either. As Manuel and Comerford were seed first and second, respectively, Abbey Weitzeil will move up to the top of the entries with her 53.18.

Weitzeil won the 50 freestyle during Saturday morning finals of the meet, posting a 24.57 to Kasia Wasick‘s 24.73 and Beryl Gastaldello‘s 25.18.

17th seed Amy Bilquist also scratched the event as 17th seed with a 55.50.

On the men’s side of the 100 freestyle suffered a sizeable number of dropped out of the prelims in the form of Santo Condorelli, Ryan Hoffer, Mohammed Hassan, Tomer Frankel, Carter Swift, and Hunter Ingram. The 100 freestyle will serve as a  redemption opportunity for Caeleb Dressel just missed out on the 50 freestyle gold, touching in a 21.83 to Bruno Fratus‘s winning 21.80.

Dressel is entered as top seed in the 100 freestyle with a 46.96 but will be met by stiff competition in the form of second seed Zach Apple (47.69), third seed Dean Farris (48.08), fourth seed Nathan Adrian (48.07), fifth seed Dylan Carter (48.52), among others.

Another event in which a number of entrants decided to scratch was the women’s 200 backstroke. 5th seeded Phoebe Bacon withdrew from the event allowing Lucie Nordmann to move up for seed #5. Additionally, Amy Bilquist, Justina Kozan, Maddie Hart, and Aria Bernal all dropped out of the event as well.
