The Miami University women’s swimming and diving team clinched victory in their first home meet of 2022, defeating Eastern Michigan 161-137 on Friday, Jan. 28. The win came with Miami dominating top positions in many swimming events, including in both relay events, and having multiple swimmers take first in multiple individual events.
How It Happened:
- Miami claimed first place in 10 of the 16 events, including both relay events. The women’s relay A team of Angelina Cakuls, Sara Lahrach-Sanchez, Honor Brodie-Foy and Nicole Maier picked up a combined time of 3:46.72 in the 400 medley relay, and the team of Brodie-Foy, Taylor Connors, Cakuls and Maier earned a combined time of 3:27.68 in the 400 freestyle relay.
- Maier swept first in her individual events. The sophomore grabbed times of 1:49.96 in the 200 freestyle and 4:59.05 in the 500 freestyle. Cakuls did the same, with times of 56.56 in the 100 backstroke and 2:02.44 in the 200 backstroke, as did Brodie-Foy in the 50 freestyle (23.77) and the 100 freestyle (52.44).
- Lahrach-Sanchez and Anna Martin also picked up top spots in individual events; Lahrach-Sanchez earned a time of 1:04.72 in the 100 backstroke and Martin getting a time of 2:20.14 in the 200 breaststroke.
- Miami swimmers found top three placements in other events as well, with Natalie Stump taking third in the 1000 freestyle (10.42.83), Erin Szczupakiewicz taking second in the 200 butterfly (2:06.66) and third in the 100 butterfly (57.57) and Martin taking second in the 200 individual medley (2:09.21) with Emily Rinker picking up third in the same event (2:09.97).
- In diving events, Vivian Niekamp placed fourth in the one meter with a score of 221.60 and fifth in the three meter with a score of 219.15.

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagle.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swim and dive program fell to Miami University, 137-161, inside the Corwin X. Nixon Aquatic Center today, Jan. 28.
“Hard-fought meet today, the girls came up a little short, but the energy and the performances were still at a high level,” Head Swimming Coach Derek Perkins said. “Divers were great, sweeping both events. Ashley [George] had a breakout meet, finishing with a season highs in the 1,000-yard free and 500-yard free. Liv [Clarino] won her first collegiate event today and a season-best in the 100 fly. Kelsey [Andrusak] had an explosive 100-yard free, achieving a lifetime-best time. Kiersten [Russell] achieved an in-season best in the 200 back. Riley [Hofmann] was outstanding as she won the 200IM at the end of the meet. The team showed a lot of fight. Not the result we wanted but definitely things to build on heading into the MAC championship.”
How It Happened
The EMU divers swept the 1-meter and 3-meter events, as senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) took first in the 1-meter (287.70) and freshman Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) finished first in the 3-meter (270.70).
Four other Eagles claimed a win, with sophomore Sav Mouat (Tecumseh, Ontario-All Saints) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:31.17), senior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) in the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Olivia Clarino (Toronto, Ontario-Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute) in the 100-yard butterfly (57.13), and senior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.95).
