Reports to:  Recreation Superintendent

 Job Summary:  This position oversees the daily operations of the White Memorial Park Pool during the summer months.  Daily operations include a variety of duties such as planning, scheduling and maintaining the seasonal operation of the pool.  Activities that fall under seasonal pool operations include, but are not limited to, all swimming pool operations, including first aid, rotations, scheduling of staff, public relations, janitorial duties, pool maintenance (including daily chemical analysis/testing, pool cleaning, filter backwashing), cleaning of bathrooms and changing rooms, and concession stand areas.  This is a working leadership position that requires being present on weekends and holidays.  Hours of operation during summer season are 6:00 am – 8:00 pm during the week and 11:00 am – 7:00 pm on weekends.

Essential Duties:

  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates lifeguards and other pool staff.
  • Creates and manages the lifeguard schedule, including guard rotations for all shifts.
  • Pays attention to schedules to avoid having staff work greater than 37.5 hours per week.
  • Collects, reviews and approves timesheets. Ensures that timesheets are submitted to Program Director by 8:00 am each Monday.
  • Checks and maintains log to record Chlorine and pH levels in the pool every 2 hours.
  • Maintains all health, safety and legal requirement according to established OSHA, VOSHA and local health department codes.
  • Monitors and manages concession operations, including inventory, purchasing and ordering.
  • Monitors and oversees proper cash handling and recording of transactions including transporting deposits from the facility to Community Center on a regular basis.
  • Responds to situations in a positive and effective manner; able to diffuse and resolve conflicts.

Other Duties:

  • Maintains records regarding all required certifications and training for self and pool staff.
  • Possesses the ability to communicate well with a variety of individuals during the course of their duties.
  • Makes timely and appropriate decisions regarding weather closures.
  • Ensures clear communication with staff and members of the public regarding scheduling changes outside of posted information.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Physical Education, Recreation Management and two (2) years relevant experience preferred; or an Associate’s Degree and three (3) years relevant experience; or a high school diploma (or equivalent) and five (5) years of relevant experience in a professional office environment.
  • AED/BLS Certification or equivalent.
  • CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard Training certificates must be current.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment, while also being self-directed.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to interact well with the public.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours which includes early mornings, weekends and evenings
  • Complies with punctuality and attendance expectations of the department. Schedules time off in advance.
  • Must complete Mandated Reporter Training (on-line) within 2 weeks of hire if not previously certified.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must be capable of successfully completing a background check.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Tolerates temperature extremes and environment – hot, humid, wet, dirt and dust
  • Works with chemicals involved with cleaning supplies for maintaining facility cleanliness
  • Regularly lifts/moves items up to 10 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly sits, stands, walks during the course of scheduled shift. May occasionally have to climb, balance, bend kneel, couch or crawl.
