Texas junior Hubert Kos continues to go on a tear at the 2025 NCAA championships. A day after winning the 200 IM and claiming his first NCAA title, he claimed victory in the 100 back and broke the NCAA record in the event. His time of 43.20 takes 0.15 off Luca Urlando‘s previous record, set at the 2022 NCAA championships.
Kos betters his best time of 43.75 from the 2024 Pac-12 Championships.
Also in Kos’s heat, Florida sophomore Jonny Marshall went a time of 43.22, also passing Urlando. Marshall had been leading for the majority of the race, but Kos passed him on the final 25.
All-Time Top Performers, Men’s 100-yard Backstroke:
- Hubert Kos, Texas — 43.20 (2025)
- Jonny Marshall, Florida — 43.22 (2025)
- Luca Urlando, Georgia — 43.35 (2022)
- Ryan Murphy, Cal — 43.49 (2016)
- Kacper Stokowski, NC State — 43.57 (2024)
Kos was slower than both Marshall and Urlando on his opening 50. However, his back half torched both swimmers by over three-tenths.
Split Comparison:
Hubert Kos, 2025 NCAA Championships (NCAA record) | Jonny Marshall, 2025 NCAA Championships | Luca Urlando, 2022 NCAA Championships (former NCAA record) | |
5oy | 20.99 | 20.70 | 20.76 |
1ooy | 22.21 | 22.52 | 22.59 |
Total | 43.20 | 43.22 | 43.35 |
With Kos’s 100 back win, he now has a good chance of going three for three in individual events at these championships. He still has the 200 back to race, the event where he is an Olympic and short course world champion. However, he will have his hands full with Destin Lasco, the NCAA record holder and three-time reigning champion in the event.
I’ve noticed that Hubi’s race pattern from prelims to finals is usually to set the same pace for the first half, but then crank up the second half in finals. 44.7/44.7 opening 100 in the 200IM but 1 second faster on the back half in finals, 21:00/20.99 first 50 in the 100 back but 0.7 seconds faster on the back half in finals (his splitting was similar in the 200 back at SC Worlds too).
Curious to see how he approaches the 200 back tomorrow.
Kos is one of the best swimmers in the world. He will break the 100M back WR and possibly Piersol’s 200M back WR in time! Hungary has had their share of top world swimmers over the decades; ie., Egerszegy, Cseh, etc. IMHO, he will not only win the 2back, he will go 1:34 or maybe 1:33+. Now, with that said, I don’t know if you or anyone noticed, but on the live stat feed, they gave Jonny Marshall the American Record in the 1back. I am from Ohio. Jonny was born in Ohio. Jonny grew up and swam in Ohio. Yes, he does have duel citizenship as do his parents with Great Britain. He represented them in Paris in the… Read more »
I think Braden confirmed in another article that just like Ilya, Johhny can’t set an American record – their circumstances are pretty much the same. So idk, that may have been a mistake.
very possible. When they first posted the results, they didn’t mark an American Record for Jonny. We shall see. Oh, my goodness, the other Hungarian is Kristof Milak! How could I forget him? Old age! LOL!
I don’t think Ilya had citizenship; he is on a green card and didn’t know it until he made the American national team, which became an issue.
I know but he does have it know, and is a dual citizen just like Johnny.
*now
Marshall has dropped from a 44.86 at the end of last season to a 43.73 at SECs to a 43.22 at NCAAs and is now the 2nd fastest 100y backstroker all-time as a sophomore.
He was 44.1 at secs last season but yeah, very impressive improvements from him
On the live stats, they gave Jonny the AMERICAN RECORD in the 1Back. SwimSwam has not recognized this yet! He was born, raised and competed in AKRON, OH. He and his family have dual citizenship with the US and Great Britain. He represented Great Britain in Paris. Someone please explain how duel citizenship works with respect to owning American Records. Thank you.
If he repped the UK he can’t set an AR.
(Unless he went through the process of changing his sporting citizenship)
The record traditionally recognized as the “American Record” is the one administered by USA Swimming and includes a criteria that requires a swimmer to be eligible to represent the U.S. in international competition. Marshall currently is not eligible to represent the U.S. in international competition.
Of course anybody can make a set of American Records that all US citizens are eligible for. That is a valid record set, but its importance is reliant upon others recognizing it as important, which is a difficult task.
We use USA swimming’s record set and eligibility rules for American Records unless otherwise noted, because those are by far the most accepted version. Incidentally, these results do too – and so that designation on… Read more »
I honestly think Marshall can surpass Ollie this summer and go 52 low in the 100 back. Will see about his 200 tomorrow but he could be the absolute future for UK backstroke
Those Longhorn training sessions must be dogfight, after dogfight. They look incredible this far!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Kos has a 51 in him in long course
Murphy and Armstrong will not improve if they choose to compete to make the 2028 Olympic Team in LA. So, that means the US needs other backstrokers to keep our strong traditions. We have Luca Orlando, Destin Lasco and Will Modglin. Perhaps there will be other young backstrokers prior to 2028 come up. The other young American hopes are Williamson and Heilman; other events. I still can’t believe both of them are committed to UVA! They will no doubt make the olympic team but the guard that has been around since 2021 Tokyo may be finished. JMHO.
