Guilherme Guido Lowers South American Record to 48.95 in 100 Backstroke

2021 INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING LEAGUE – SEASON 3, MATCH 3

Brazilian Guilherme Guido, representing the London Roar, blasted a 48.95 in the men’s 100 backstroke on Friday during match 3 of the 2021 ISL season. The 34-year-old Guido lowered his own Brazilian and South American Records by 0.45.

Guido won the race by a wide enough margin that he stole the points from four other swimmers, giving him a total of 19. London Roar teammate Luke Greenbank placed 4th, giving London a total of 24 points in the race.

Guido turned at the 50-meter mark in a blazing 23.23 and brought it back in 25.72. Though his 2nd 50 was nearly a second slower than Coleman Stewart‘s when he set the World Record last weekend, his first 50 was faster than Stewart’s. Guido and Stewart both utilize the underwater portion of the race to the fullest extent, whereas former 100 SCM backstroke World Record holder Kliment Kolesnikov tends to pop up at around 11 meters. While Stewart set the World Record with a mustache, Guido went with a full beard for this performance.

Year Guido’s Time Drops
2009 49.63
2018 49.45
2020 49.40
2021 48.95

Guido has been able to continue to drop time into his thirties due to improvements in his technique, specifically, swimming straight and not hitting the lane line. Guido also swam the 2nd-fastest 50 backstroke of his career on day 1, posting a 22.60, just 0.05 off his best time, which is also the Brazilian and South American Record. Guido’s 50 backstroke on day 1 of Match 3 is also the 5th-fastest performance all-time, though Guido himself is the 3rd-fastest performer all-time in the 50 backstroke.
