Greater Latrobe freestyler Monica Sowinski gives verbal to Kentucky Wildcats

The University of Kentucky continues to fill out a great freshman class, getting a verbal commitment from Pennsylvania freestyler Monica Sowinski.

Sowinski, out of Greater Latrobe High School, is a returning champion at the WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League) AAA Championships, having won the 200 free last season.

Also competing for Greater Latrobe Aqua Club, Sowinski is one of those all-important 100/200 freestylers that NCAA teams covet for their relay significance. Her lifetime-bests already get her within striking distance of a relay spot at UK, based on the Wildcats’ finishes at the SEC Championships in the 200, 400 and 800 free relays last year.

Sowinski’s Top Times

  • 100 free: 51.09
  • 200 free: 1:50.25
  • 50 free:  24.94
  • 500 free: 5:04.35

Sowinski is also a solid butterflyer, though it seems her collegiate focus will be very much on freestyle.

She joins a large Kentucky class that already includes Meredith Whisenhunt, Allie Petersen, Olivia Treski, Kristen Keifer and several others.
