Great Britain’s Gary Hunt continued his dominance of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series with his fifth consecutive win at the Azores stop.
Hunt won competition in Azores, Portugal despite a lackluster first day that saw him in just 12th place overall.
“I definitely put the pressure on myself with a shaky start,” Hunt said on the Red Bull Cliff Diving website. “I just knew that it was so important for my morale to do a good first dive off the rocks today. It just lifted my spirits and confidence to keep going.”
The brunt of competition at the Azores stop takes place right off a rock face, which makes for some stunning photographs. We’ve republished a few below, courtesy of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series website, but you can find a full gallery here.
Two rounds take place off the cliff face and two rounds off a makeshift platform 27 meters above the water – that’s nearly double the highest platform you see in a typical NCAA competition.
Hunt now leads the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series by over 400 points. He stands at 1000, with countryman Blake Aldridge tied for second with Colombia’s Orlando Duque.
Mexico’s Jonathan Paredes took second in Azores, with American Andy Jones rounding out the top three.
