Satomi Suzuki is a competitive swimmer who represents Japan internationally.
2012 Olympic Games
At her first Olympics, Suzuki won a trio of medals, all from swimming breaststroke. First she placed 3rd in the 100 with a time of 1:06.46. She went onto move up in the ranks and place 2nd in the 200 with a new Asian record of 2:20.72. Her last medal came by being a member of Japan’s bronze medal winning 4×100 medley relay, in which Suzuki split 1:05.96.
2013 World Championships
At the 2013 world champs, Suzuki swam the 100 and 200 breaststroke again. In the 100, she qualified for semifinal but did not make it to the final heat, finishing 12th (1:07.83) overall. She had a similar result in the 200, finishing 11th (2:25.77) overall. She also swam on Japan’s 4×100 medley relay, which placed 5th in finals.
2014 Asian Games
At the 2014 Asian games, Suzuki swam the 50 and 100 breaststroke. She won her first international gold in the 50 breast (31.34) and placed 4th in the 100 (1:08.61), just outside of medaling.
2016 Olympic Games
At her 2nd Olympics, Suzuki placed 12th in the 100 breast (1:07.18). She also swam on the 4×100 medley relay in prelims, which placed 10th overall.
2017 World Championships
After being absent from the 2015 world championships team, Suzuki returned to world champs and swam the 100 breast, placing 11th overall in semi finals (1:07.08). She also competed in the 50 breast, where she placed 13th in semi finals (30.95), and the 200 breast, where she finished 12th in semi finals (2:25.60).
2018 Pan Pacific Championships
Able to get back down to her old times, Suzuki competed in the 100 and 200 breast in her home country of Japan. In the 100, she finished 4th in 1:06.51, just .17 outside of medaling. On the last day of the meet, she won her first international medal in 4 years by touching 3rd in the 200 breast (2:22.22).
2018 Asian Games
Suzuki continued her medal streak in Jakarta, swimming the 50 and 100 breast and setting games records in both (30.83 and 1:06.40). This earned her a spot on Japan’s 4×100 medley relay, where Suzuki split 1:05.43 en route to a games and national record and her 3rd gold of the meet.
2022(3) Asian Games (Hangzhou, China)
Suzuki picked up double breaststroke silver. She started things off with a new national record of 30.14 at 32-years of age. She followed through with a 1:06.95 100, taking 2nd to countrywoman Reona Aoki. It was Suzuki who was out a little faster than Aoki, splitting 31.12 on the first 50m to Aoki’s 31.21. Aoki then came home slightly faster.
