Nathan Owens
Background
Head Coach Nathan Owens is in his 11th season with the Minnesota State Women’s Swimming and Diving Team. During his tenure, the Swimming and Diving team has produced the top performer’s program history. Owens has helped rewrite the program’s record books by coaching 19 of the 19 school record holders including all individuals and relay teams. In addition, Owens coached 152 of the 180 athletes that have achieved top-10 times in program history within each event. Owens has led the Mavericks to 9 post-season appearances in 11 years and led the program to finish in the top-25 Nationally six times. Since 2004 Owens has coached over 40 individuals athletes to over 130 All-American honors and produced U.S. and Canadian Olympic trials qualifiers.
This season, Owens helped lead the Women’s Swimming and Diving program into a new era as they began competing in the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference (NSISC). In 2015, the Mavericks finished fourth out of nine women’s programs in the New South. The Mavericks had fourteen individual top-8 finishes at the NSISC Championships which included five new school records, seven individual NCAA provisional qualifying times, and one Conference Champion 200 freestyle team that set new Conference and pool records.
The Mavericks qualified their 200 Freestyle Relay Team of Nicole Bean, Kylie Gaeth, Emily Green, and Cecilia Hake with a time of 1:33.88 to the NCAA Chamnpionships March 11 – 14, 2015. Hake also qualified individually in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 55.68.
In addition to coaching, Owens is the program director for Learn to Swim with the Mavericks, a year-round youth swim lesson program that enrolls over 700 area children each year. Coach Owens also directs seasonal Swim Camps for youth and age-group swimmers as well as clinics for adult swimmers and triathletes.
Prior to Minnesota State, Owens served as an assistant coach for Texas Christian University (TCU) and helped guide the Horned Frogs to back-to-back Conference USA titles in 2002 & 2003. He also served as a Head Coach at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., from 2000-2002. Prior to his appointment at St. Norber, Owens served as the Head Coach for Wausau East High School, in Wausau, Wis. In the summer of 2000, Owens coached the Wausau Tide Swimming Club and helped to product one Olympic trials qualifier.
Owens swan at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 1996-1999 where he earned his bachelors degree in Business Administration. He received his master’s degree in Kinesiology from Texas Christian University in 2004. Owen resides in North Mankato, MN with his wise Lindsey and son Eli.
