Alejandra Garcia Sanchez

Hailing from Mexico City, Mexico, Alejandra Garcia Sanchez’s long trip from home was worthwhile. Sanchez’s versatility has been essential to Asheville’s success.

Background

Sanchez grew up in Mexico City, Mexico with her parents and younger brother. She began swimming at age ten for Centro de Actividades Acuáticas de Alto Nivel. She would swim with this team until high school graduation.

Sanchez enjoyed an incredibly successful high school swimming career at The American School Foundation. Not only did she graduate in the top 10% of her class with a 3.7 GPA, but held the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 1500 freestyle and 200 backstroke school records. She was also awarded the Coaches Award. Most notably, she had the opportunity to represent her country. Sanchez was a member of the Mexican National Team and medaled at Mexican Nationals.

Freshman Year

Sanchez swam a variety of events for Asheville during her freshman year. At the Bulldogs double-dual meet against Gardner-Webb and Marshall, Sanchez was the top point scorer in both the 500 and 200 freestyle events. Sanchez also scored valuable points in the individual backstroke events, as well as on relays. At the 2015 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Conference Championships, Sanchez was a member of the 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. All four relays shattered the Bulldog varsity records. Sanchez also earned personal best times in the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Sanchez finished the season with CCSA All-Academic Honors.

Sophomore Year

Sanchez had an outstanding year for the Bulldogs, earning many points in the regular season. She raced to multiple first place finishes in the 200 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She was also a member of many successful relays for the Blue and White. Sanchez bested the Varsity Record in the 200 butterfly at Asheville’s meet against the University of North Florida, coming in first place. She would break her own record in the event again at the 2015 Georgia Tech Mid Season Invitational, touching the wall at 2:07.11. At the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, Sanchez was a key member of the Varsity Record setting 800 freestyle relay. She anchored the relay narrowly missing fifth place by 5 hundredths of a second. Sanchez swam the 500 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
