VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman Justin Meyn won three individual events, highlighting Binghamton’s sweep against Canisius in a swimming & diving dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The Bearcat women (3-1) beat the Golden Griffs 207-93 while the men took a 167-131 decision.
“It was a full team effort on both sides,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “Our depth made the difference, especially in the men’s meet when we lost the first five events but took places 2-4. After that, we had some good first-place performanes. The women took 1-2 in the first relay and held true the rest of the day. Both teams did a great job top to bottom.”
Meyn continued his impressive rookie season with victories in the men’s 50 free (21.82), 100 free (47.72) and 100 IM (53.53). He now has five first-place finishes in the Bearcats’ three dual meets this season.
Sophomore Chris Egan swept the men’s diving events with scores of 257.70 in the one-meter and 283.57 in the three-meter. Also winning on the men’s side were senior Ross Bernstein in the 200 fly (1:55.31) and sophomore Brian Harding in the 200 back (2:00.18).
On the women’s side, Binghamton had three double winners. Junior Kaitlyn Smolar swept 1000 free (10:49.77) and the 500 free (5:30.32), freshman Audrey Pesek captured the 100 back (59.58) and 200 back (2:10.25) while fellow freshman Meadow Perez took top honors in the 200 fly (2:12.49) and 100 fly (1:00.52).
Other winners on the women’s side included senior Sydney Atendido in the 100 breast (1:06.07), freshman Manuela Matkovic in the 200 free (1:59.76), senior Olivia Santos in the 100 free (54.61), sophomore Kelli O’Shea in the 200 breast (2:27.83) and fellow senior Rebecca Nelson in the 100 IM (1:01.83).
Atendido and Santos were also a part of both first-place relay teams. They joined sophomore Belen Marriaga and junior Erica Bachiller in the 400 medley (1:40.66) as well as Marriaga and senior Kaitlyn Lange in the 200 free.
Binghamton heads to Iona next Saturday for a dual meet at 1 p.m.

The Canisius men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell on the road Saturday afternoon in Vestal, N.Y. The Canisius men were defeated by Binghamton, 167-131, while the women’s team suffered a 207-93 loss to the Bearcats.
In women’s diving, Canisius senior Gianna Cornelia swept her events, placing first in both the 1-meter (230.92) and 3-meter (230.40) events. Senior Vinnie Costanzo took third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 211.20 and placed second in the 1-meter (220.15) competition.
Junior Sage Pollack earned the only first-place finish for the women’s side of competition. The New City, N.Y., native won the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 24.95.
The men’s side earned top scores in nine of the 14 events on Saturday afternoon, with four different swimmers earning first place in individual events.
Sophomore Liam O’Connell earned top scores in the 1,000-yard and 500-yard free, while fellow sophomore Kyle Kimerer took first in the 200-yard free event.
Senior Kenyon Winkky earned top finishes after coming in first in the 100-yard backstroke and butterfly events. Junior Lucas Kennedy took top honors in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, while also placing second in the 100 IM.
The Blue and Gold close out a four-meet travel schedule on Nov. 15 in Olean, N.Y., when they take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. Diving is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the swimming competition is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
