Binghamton Cruises To Sweep of Canisius

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior Maria Pignatelli recorded three individual victories and Binghamton posted three other double-event winners, highlighting its dual meet sweep against Canisius on Saturday afternoon at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The Bearcat men turned in a 192-106 triumph while the women were victorious by a 217-83 margin. 

“I thought today was great,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “We swam well and a lot of people raced in different events. I thought the energy today was great.”

Pignatelli swept the women’s 50 breast (30.83), 50 free (24.82) and 100 free (54.40). She also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team that included sophomore Eva Smith, freshman Julia Iwanow and junior Ava Olsian and clocked a time of 1:47.95.

Smith, meanwhile, swept both the women’s 50 back (27.30) and 100 back (58.16). Other double-event winners for Binghamton included senior Elizabeth Tirado, who swept the women’s 1-meter (228.15) and three-meter (219.85) diving events as well as freshman Isaih Francis, who took top honors in the men’s 50 back (24.22) and 100 back (52.39).

Other individual event winners for Binghamton on the women’s side were Iwanow in the 100 breast (1:06.81), senior Celia Webster in the 100 fly (59.94), sophomore Leonor Coelho in the 500 free (5:14.93) and junior Haley Nowak in the 50 fly (26.87). 

In addition, Olsian and Nowak swam on the first-place 200 free relay team and were joined by freshman Elle Gerbes and Lauren Maierle. The quartet clocked a time of 1:41.09.

Besides his two individual victories, Francis also swam on both men’s first-place relays. The 200 medley relay team included sophomores Tyler SchultzCullin Cole and Ryaan Alshami and recorded a time of 1:33.30. The 200 free relay quartet, meanwhile, included senior Liam Preston and sophomores William Deutmeyer and Evan Peters and recorded a time of 1:25.94. 

Schultz won the 50 breast (26.55) while Preston captured the 100 free (46.51), Cole was first in the 50 free (21.46) and Peters touched first in the 200 free (1:42.58). 

Other first-place finishers on the men’s side included junior Dylan Norby in the three-meter diving event (293.85), sophomore Logan Shriver in the 500 free (4:50.74) and freshman Samuel Pikofsky-Christiansen in the one-meter diving competition (283.50).

Binghamton heads to NJIT next week, where the men will meet the Highlanders at noon. The Bearcat women, meanwhile, will face Central Connecticut at the same venue.

The host Binghamton Bearcats swept a dual meet over Canisius in collegiate swimming and diving action Saturday afternoon at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in Vestal, N.Y.

The Binghamton women won their event by the final score of 217-83, while the Binghamton men earned a 192-106 victory over the Golden Griffins.

In the women’s dual meet, Canisius sophomore Daphne Mead won a pair of events, starting with the 400-yard IM, where she touched the wall first with her time of 4:35.61. She later went on to win the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:00.67. The Baltimore, Md., native also recorded a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with her time of 59.94. Junior Evie Leighton won the 200-yard free race with her time of 1:56.27. Mead and Leighton joined with teammates Leyna Swanson and Hannah Brainard to finish second in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, as well.

In the men’s competition, senior Toby Mayfield won three races on the day, starting with a first-place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:12.07. He went on to touch the wall first in the 50-yard butterfly (23.56) before winning the 100-yard IM with a time of 53.11. Junior Elliot Somers won the 100-yard butterfly (51.83) and senior Sam Vidal won the 100-yard breaststroke with his time of 58.17.

UP NEXT
Canisius will return to the road Nov. 7, when the Griffs take part in a dual meet at long-time rival St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. The diving portion of the dual meet will start at 3 p.m., and the swimming action is set to start at 6 p.m.
